What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 488

But Elaine was furious with him. When he reached out, she shoved him away.

Helpless, Finnian just stood silently beside her.

The corridor fell into a suffocating silence for a long time until Elaine buried her face in her hands and wailed. "A boy! How could it be a boy?"

Josephine's expression was marked by profound disappointment. "Rafael's son is gone. If he saw this from heaven, it would break his heart. He died so young, and now his only heir... is gone too," she murmured.

Agnes guided the old woman to a nearby bench. Josephine closed her eyes, her lips moving silently in what looked like an endless, desperate prayer.

Watching his family drown in their grief, Finnian finally broke the silence. "Mom, Grandmother, we can't tell Noelle about this yet."

Elaine looked up, glaring at him with swollen eyes. "She's going to find out sooner or later. Do you really think we can hide it?"

"She just got out of surgery, and she hasn't recovered," Finnian said steadily. "If we tell her she lost a son, the shock will destroy her. When she's stronger, if she wants to know, she can find out herself. Mom, if we tell her right now, I guarantee you she will lose the second baby, too."

Josephine opened her eyes and looked at her grandson. "Finnian is right," she said grimly. "Keep it a secret for now. Absolutely no one is to breathe a word of this."

"Don't worry, ma'am. My lips are sealed," Agnes quickly promised.

Elaine wiped her tears and drew a shaky breath. "I understand. I won't say anything."

Just then, Noelle was wheeled out of the OR. Still under the effects of the anesthesia, she hadn't woken up yet. Elaine watched her with immense heartache, accompanying the stretcher all the way to a luxury private ward.

Elaine arranged for the estate chefs to prepare and deliver a highly nutritious meal. Leaving Finnian to watch over the room, she escorted Josephine downstairs. Once they were out of earshot, she spoke. "Mom, Kaia is here. She's down in the parking garage. Let's go see what she has to say for herself."

Josephine paused. "Do you really believe Kaia caused all of this?"

"Whenever anyone else speaks to Noelle, everything is perfectly fine! But the minute she pulls Noelle aside for a chat, Noelle gets stressed out to the point of a miscarriage?" Elaine huffed indignantly. "Mom, do you honestly still think she's innocent?"

Josephine remained silent.

"Kaia, just tell us what happened. I'm not taking sides; I just want the truth," Josephine said, her tone much more measured.

Kaia knew that mere words wouldn't be enough to clear her name. Fortunately, she had come prepared.

She pulled out her phone, opened the voice memo app, pressed play, and held the speaker up for them to hear.

Noelle's voice echoed from the phone, crystal clear:

"He admitted it himself. I could tell even back then. He looked at me differently. He would subconsciously worry about me, care about who I was talking to, and get cold and distant if other guys got too close to me..."

"So, have you ever thought about why you were the one who ended up marrying him?"

"How does it feel to be completely crushed professionally by your own substitute?"

"He loved me! He'll never forget me for the rest of his life. He only married you because I married Rafael. He couldn't have me, so he had to settle for the next best thing..."
