The moment Kaia arrived, she was guided to the seat of honor. The Regional President of Cytogene was a sixty-year-old German executive with silver hair and boundless energy. Kaia conversed with him fluently in English.
Just then, Finnian appeared at the restaurant entrance. Every eye in the room lifted. The German executive immediately stood up and walked over with a beaming smile to shake Finnian's hand.
Finnian wore a standard, professional smile. Shortly after, he was seated directly beside Kaia.
She glanced at him, and he offered her a faint smile.
Kaia lowered her gaze. When she heard him tell the German executive in English that he was here to inspect new projects, she scoffed inwardly. If he was here on business, why the hell was he crashing their dinner?
Silas hadn't expected Finnian to show up either. His fingers tightened around his glass.
The dinner dragged on until around eleven o'clock. Silas took several drinks on Kaia's behalf. Since the Cytogene experts were all seasoned drinkers, Silas ended up heavily intoxicated. Everyone on their team had indulged except Kaia. Watching Silas sway on his feet, Kaia walked over and grabbed his arm. "Silas, if you can't hold your liquor, stop trying to be a hero. You're going to make yourself sick."
Silas flashed a goofy grin and leaned his weight against her. "I'm just happy tonight! Our brilliant Dr. Chavez did Veridian proud again. Dr. Chavez, you're amazing. You're my idol... my goddess. I look up to you... I worship you..."
Kaia ignored his drunken rambling, half-dragging, half-carrying him into the elevator.
At over six feet tall, Silas was as heavy as a bag of cement. Kaia worked up a sweat just getting him down the hall.
If she had known this would happen, she would have brought two assistants along. Now what? She had only brought the core technical team. Who was supposed to look after Silas tonight?
"Where's your room key?" Kaia asked as they reached their floor.
Silas patted his pockets for an eternity before finally fishing a key card out of his inner suit pocket. "Here!"
Kaia swiped the door open, hauled him inside, and dumped him onto the sofa. She turned to pour him a glass of water while Silas rubbed his temples, groaning softly.
Kaia handed him the glass of warm water. "Drink some."
