"Mom, I never thought Kaia would suddenly ask for a divorce," Finnian said, staring blankly at the ceiling. "When she said it, my mind went completely blank. Elaine looked down at the IV in the back of her hand, her voice tinged with self-reproach. "I failed her as a mother-in-law, too. From the moment she joined the family, I picked on her. I constantly compared her to Noelle, saying she was too quiet and boring. I never considered what it was like for a woman to enter a strange family, how many grievances she had to swallow while carefully trying to please everyone.
