Cassienne stood in front of the tall glass wall of her opulent office, a warm cup of coffee cradled in her hand. The steam rose gently, carrying the rich aroma of freshly brewed beans that mixed with the faint
scent of her vanilla perfume.
She was dressed sharply in a pink and white striped button–down shirt, neatly tucked into a fitted brown pencil skirt that hugged her curves just right. Her long black hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail, framing her face and giving her a fresh, radiant look.
The morning sun filtered through the windows, casting a soft glow on her skin as she gazed out at the busy business street below. Cars zipped by, pedestrians hurried along the sidewalks, and the city skyline stretched out like a promise of endless possibilities.
Her mind wandered back to the previous night and morning with Dreston. The way he had held her under the shower, his promises echoing in her ears like a soothing melody.
“I will love you till my last breath.”
Those words had melted away the doubts that Tina’s sly comments and her friend’s warnings had planted. She replayed the moments–the tenderness in his touch, the safety she felt in his arms.
Her heart fluttered in a way she couldn’t quite explain, a mix of joy and peace that made her lips curve into a small, secret smile. For the first time in years, she felt truly seen, and loved. The past pains of their marriage and divorce seemed distant now, replaced by this new warmth she had just found in him.
A gentle knock pulled her from her thoughts. Without turning, she called out in her calm, professional voice, “Come in, please.”
The door opened with a soft creak, and Tina stepped inside, closing it behind her with a quiet click.
Tina’s green eyes sparkled brightly this morning, as if she carried some hidden excitement or perhaps a piece of good news.
She wore a stunning blue dress that hugged her figure perfectly, the fabric shimmering slightly under the office lights. Her blonde hair fell in loose waves over her shoulders, and she flashed a gentle smile that seemed almost too perfect.
“Good morning, Cass. How are you doing?” Tina asked, her tone light and friendly.
Cassienne, still lost in thoughts of Dreston, turned at the sound of her voice. A genuine smile lit up her face. “Morning, Tina. You look great in blue.”
Tina’s brows pulled together for a split second, confusion flickering in her eyes. Cassienne looked… happy. Genuinely happy. That wasn’t part of Tina’s plan. But she masked it quickly, her smile widening to hide the flicker of anger bubbling inside.
No one could guess how fake it was, how seeing Cassienne this content twisted something jealous in her gut. “Thanks. That’s very kind of you. You also look beautiful and happy. What’s the cause?”

Cassienne returned to her large mahogany desk, setting down the mug after taking a slow sip of the hot coffee. The bitter–sweet taste grounded her as she sat in her high–backed leather chair. She gestured to one of the plush seats across from her. “Please, sit.”
Tina smiled again–big and bright–and lowered herself into the chair, crossing her legs gracefully.
“So, why are you here?” Cassienne asked, her tone polite but direct, her blue eyes steady on Tina.
Tina blinked, shocked and a bit disappointed. She had just asked about Cassienne’s happiness, but instead of answering, Cassienne had flipped the question. Tina decided to play the friend card, leaning forward slightly. “Does a friend need a reason to visit her friend? I just thought I should check on you.”
Cassienne studied her for a moment, her expression unreadable. She nodded slowly. “I guess you’re right. But this is Monday morning. I suppose you should have work. And as I know, you have a lot today because I pushed some files for you to review and approve. It means you haven’t opened your emails this morning.”
Tina’s face flushed a little. She stood up quickly, realizing her mistake. Cassienne was all business when it came to work–no room for casual drop–ins. “I am sorry. I was just carried away with our reunion. You know, it’s been so long since-”
“Tina,” Cassienne interrupted firmly, her voice cutting through like a blade. She didn’t look up from her desk, already flipping open a folder.
Tina froze, her words hanging in the air.
“This is an office. A working place. Don’t make this mistake again.”
The words landed like a quiet command. Cassienne’s focus shifted entirely to her papers, her ponytail swaying slightly as she leaned forward. Tina stood there uncomfortably for a few seconds, the awkward silence stretching.
She felt exposed, like a child caught playing in a serious room. Without another word, she turned and left the office, the door shutting with a soft click behind her. Outside, her smile faded, replaced by a scowl.
Cassienne’s happiness gnawed at her. Why did everything seem to be falling into place for her?
Inside, Cassienne exhaled slowly, pushing the encounter aside. Work waited, and she dove back in, her
mind briefly wandering to Dreston again, bringing back that warm smile.
The clock ticked toward lunchtime, but Cassienne was deep in a meeting in the sleek conference room.
Floor–to–ceiling windows let in natural light, illuminating the long glass table where three software developers sat, laptops open and presentations ready. As CTO of Auralink System, it was her responsibility to foster innovation. 1
The company thrived on new ideas, and these pitches could push them further ahead in the competitive tech industry.

The first developer, a young man with glasses and nervous energy, presented an Al–driven analytics tool for user behavior prediction. Slides flashed on the screen–charts, code snippets, demos. Cassienne listened intently, jotting notes on her tablet.
The second pitched a cybersecurity enhancement using blockchain integration, her voice confident as she demonstrated a prototype. The third wrapped up with a cloud–based collaboration platform, emphasizing scalability and real–time features.
As the last speaker finished, applause rippled through the room. Cassienne nodded appreciatively.” Impressive work, all of you. I’ll review the details thoroughly and pass my recommendations to the director of engineering for final approval. Thank you for your efforts–this could really elevate us.”
The team gathered their things and filed out, chatting excitedly. Elena Brook, Cassienne’s efficient secretary, stepped forward to clear the table, stacking folders neatly and wiping down the surface with a quick cloth.
Ivy Hart, her personal assistant, approached with Cassienne’s phone in hand. “A message from the CEO,” Ivy said, her tone professional.
At the mention of the CEO–Dreston–Cassienne’s eyes lit up, a soft smile breaking through her focused demeanor. She took the phone and read the text: “In your office. I bought lunch.”
