Cassienne walked steadily down the hallway of the hospital, her heels clicking softly with each step.
In her hands was a small paper bag from a nearby grocery store. Inside were fresh fruits she had picked up on her way–grapes, apples, and sliced oranges. It wasn’t much, but bringing something for him felt natural.
Almost instinctive.
As she approached the familiar VIP ward, her heartbeat began to quicken slightly.
This was the first time she had come to see him alone since the accident. She slowed down when she
reached the door to his room.
Voices came from inside. Male voices. For a moment, she hesitated. Then she recognized one of them.
Peter Steel. The company’s Development Manager.
Without wasting time, Cassienne pushed the door open and stepped inside. The conversation in the room stopped immediately.
Four heads turned toward her. Peter Steel stood near the foot of the bed alongside two other Auralink executives who had come to check on their recovering CEO.
For a brief moment, the room was silent. Then Peter spoke first. “Welcome, Mrs. Tremont.”
The other two executives nodded respectfully. Dreston watched the exchange quietly from his bed.
The greeting puzzled him slightly. Mrs. Tremont. Technically, she was his ex–wife. But perhaps the company still addressed her that way out of respect.
He decided not to question it.
Cassienne walked further into the room, her expression calm and composed. She greeted the men politely.
“Good evening, Mr. Steel.”
“Good evening.”
The other two executives also nodded respectfully as she acknowledged them.
Her posture was professional, confident–the same authority she carried at the office.
Once the greetings were done, she stepped closer to the hospital bed. Her eyes softened slightly when they met Dreston’s.
“Hey,” she said gently. “How are you doing?”
Dreston leaned slightly back against the raised bed. “I’m doing great, as you can see.”

His tone was neutral. Not cold. But not warm either.
Cassienne nodded quietly.
Peter glanced between them before clearing his throat.“We should leave you two to talk.”
The other executives agreed immediately. They gave brief farewells before heading toward the door.
“Take care, Mr. Tremont.”
“Get well soon.”
Within seconds the room grew quiet again as the door closed behind them.
Cassienne set the small bag of fruits on the side table.
She moved naturally around the room, opening the refrigerator beside the cabinet and placing some of the fruits inside.
The simple act made the room feel strangely domestic.
When she finished, she walked toward the small sink inside the ensuite bathroom.
The sound of running water filled the quiet room as she washed her hands. Dreston watched her silently from the bed.
Every movement she made felt familiar. Almost too familiar. But he couldn’t explain why.
When Cassienne returned, she carried a small handful of grapes.
She stopped beside the bed.
“Open your mouth.”
The request was simple and casual. But it stunned him.
Dreston stared at her for a moment. For reasons he couldn’t explain, the command felt strangely natural as if she had done this many times before.
He hesitated briefly. Then, almost unconsciously, he opened his mouth. Cassienne placed a grape gently between his lips.
He chewed slowly.
Neither of them spoke. She fed him another. And another.
The quiet between them wasn’t awkward. It was heavy with things left unsaid. And after a few more grapes, she took one for herself and ate it.
Still, neither of them spoke.
When she finished, she walked back into the bathroom again to wash her hands.

Inside the ensuite, she stood in front of the vanity sink.
Water ran softly from the tap as she rinsed her fingers. For a moment she lifted her gaze to the mirror.
Her reflection stared back at her.
Her face looked calm. But her eyes carried exhaustion. She exhaled slowly.
“Please let him remember everything.”
The silent wish formed in her mind before she could stop it.
“Let him come back to me completely.”
She closed her eyes briefly.
“And this time… Let us finally live in peace.”
She turned off the tap and dried her hands before stepping back into the room.
When she returned, Dreston had shifted positions. He was now sitting at the edge of the hospital bed, his feet resting lightly on the floor.
Cassienne paused near the bathroom door. He was looking at her. His grey eyes were steady, studying
her.
Something about the way he watched her made her chest tighten slightly. For a brief second, something
stirred inside her.
A familiar warmth.
Heat that crawled slowly through her core. She quickly pushed the feeling away. Now was not the time
for that.
She walked forward and sat down in the chair beside him.
“I can see you’re really getting better,” she said softly.
“That’s good.”
Dreston nodded. Then he spoke. “I want us to talk about the baby.”
Cassienne flinched slightly.
The words landed heavier than she expected.
She remained silent. But he continued. “Since I’m responsible for it… I should take responsibility.”
Cassienne lowered her gaze slightly. She didn’t interrupt.
