Chapter One Hundred And Ninety–Three: God, She Has Missed This.
The moment Dreston pulled her closer, Cassienne’s breath caught in her throat.
His movement had been sudden. Even reckless, considering the monitors attached to his body and the thin wires running across his chest. His lips met hers, desperately.
Cassienne gasped into the kiss, her hands instinctively pressing against his shoulders. For a brief second, her mind screamed at her to push him away. The doctor had warned them about stress. About his recovery. About how fragile his condition still was.
But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Not when he was holding her like that. Not when she could feel the warmth of him through the thin hospital gown.
Her body stiffened at first, caught between fear and longing. She was terrified that the machines would start beeping wildly, that the nurses would rush in, that his condition would worsen.
But nothing happened. The monitors continued their steady rhythm. And the room remained quiet.
Dreston didn’t deepen the kiss aggressively. Instead, his lips moved gently against hers, testing, searching, almost as if he was trying to recognize something he couldn’t fully remember.
Cassienne felt her resistance weakening as her fingers curled slightly against his shoulder, gripping the fabric as a familiar warmth spread through her chest. That same warmth she had felt so many times before.
The same warmth she had tried desperately to bury ever since the accident.
When Dreston finally pulled away, he didn’t look startled or ashamed.
He simply watched her, studying her reaction.
Cassienne’s breathing was uneven now. Her chest rose and fell as she tried to steady herself. “That… was… reckless of you,” she managed to say between breaths.
Her voice trembled slightly despite her effort to sound stern. “You shouldn’t be doing things like that.”
But Dreston didn’t react to the scolding. He remained perfectly calm.
His grey eyes remained fixed on her face, observing every small change in her expression. The way her lips trembled slightly. The way her cheeks had flushed faintly.
Cassienne took a small step back, creating some distance between them. She didn’t trust him not to do something equally reckless again.
Or worse, she didn’t trust herself not to let him.
“Good night, Cass.”
The nickname slipped from his lips naturally.

Cassienne froze. Cass? He had used it again. Her eyes widened slightly.
Dreston didn’t seem to notice the significance of it. Or perhaps he did.
”
got the answer I was looking for,” he said quietly. “I hope to see you again soon.”
Then, as if nothing unusual had happened, he adjusted his position and leaned back against the pillows. His posture relaxed as he settled into the bed.
He looked calm.
Cassienne remained standing there, still stunned. Her heart was pounding loudly in her chest.
She watched him carefully as he closed his eyes for a moment and rested his head back. He wasn’t looking at her anymore. And somehow that hurt even more.
Tears began forming in her eyes. She could feel the conflict inside him. Even if he wasn’t saying it. Even if he didn’t fully understand it himself. The kiss had confirmed what his mind couldn’t accept yet.
The connection between them was still there. And his body remembered her. His heart remembered her. But his memories refused to cooperate.
Cassienne swallowed hard.
She could see the pain in the tightness of his jaw. In the quiet way he lay there, pretending to be calm.
He wasn’t looking at her anymore because he was trying to control something inside himself.
Something he didn’t understand. And that realization broke her heart even more.
She wanted to go to him.
She wanted to wrap her arms around him and tell him everything. To tell him that he had once held her and promised that nothing–not even death–would separate them again.
She wanted to take away his confusion and his pain. But she couldn’t. The doctors had warned them that forcing his memory could damage him permanently.
So she stood there silently, tears threatening to fall. And then, her heart made the decision before her mind could stop it.
Cassienne stepped forward again.
Dreston opened his eyes slightly when he felt her presence near him. Before he could react, she bent down.
And she kissed him. This time it was her who initiated it. The contact was soft at first. But it carried everything she had been holding back.
Dreston froze. For a second, he didn’t move. But when he felt the emotion in her kiss, the warmth and the familiarity.

His hand moved instinctively, sliding behind her head as he pulled her closer.
Her long dark hair fell forward, partially covering his face as she leaned over him.
Everything seems to disappear around them. All that remained was the strange, powerful pull between them.
Cassienne felt his fingers in her hair, holding her gently and firmly as he returned the kiss.
Her chest tightened.
God, she had missed this. She has missed him. Her fingers pressed lightly against the mattress beside him as she leaned closer, careful not to disturb the wires connected to his body.
Dreston deepened the kiss slightly, not aggressively but with growing certainty.
Something inside him was reacting. Something instinctive. Still it’s something his mind couldn’t explain. And that only made the confusion worse.
Finally, Cassienne pulled away slowly. Their foreheads remained close for a moment.
Neither of them spoke. Their breathing was uneven.
Dreston opened his eyes fully now. The intensity in his gaze had changed. Now what remains is confusion and curiosity. Also, something else he couldn’t quite name.
Cassienne stepped back carefully. Her eyes were shining now. But she forced herself to smile slightly.
“Now we’re even,” she whispered softly.
Dreston didn’t answer. He was still trying to process what had just happened.
