Chapter Twenty-One: A Job Offer.
The man pulled away from Cassienne slowly, his eyes glinting with a mix of playfulness and something deeper, like he had just uncovered a secret.
She stood there, completely speechless. All she could do was lift her trembling fingers to her lips, touching them as if to make sure the moment was real. A soft warmth lingered where his mouth had been, sending tiny sparks through her skin.
Cassienne had never kissed anyone before. Not once in her whole life. This mysterious stranger had just stolen her very first kiss, right there in the middle of the bustling office. Under normal circumstances, she would have been furious. But now? She couldn’t explain the rush of feelings swirling inside her. It was confusing, exciting, and a little scary at the same time.
A part of her wanted to run, but another quiet, hidden part of her felt alive in a way she had never known. Why did this feel so right, even though it was so unexpected?
“Hi,” the man said, his voice smooth and confident. He extended his hand for a handshake, a small smile playing on his lips. “I’m Corren Thornwyck.”
Cassienne blinked, still caught in the haze of the kiss. The tingling sensation on her lips wouldn’t fade; it pulsed gently, reminding her of every second of that brief contact. For the first time, someone had seen her-not just as the quiet girl in the corner, but as someone worthy of attention, of affection.
It surprised her deeply, stirring a warmth in her chest that pushed back against years of feeling invisible. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, not from sadness, but from the sheer shock of it all. Did she really deserve this? After so long feeling overlooked, this moment made her question everything.
While everyone around them was still frozen in shock-including Daisy, who stood with her mouth slightly open -Merrick’s face darkened with anger. He had been watching from across the room, his protective instincts kicking in like a switch.
In just four long strides, he crossed the space between them and planted himself firmly between Cassienne and Corren, his broad shoulders blocking the view.
He glared at Corren, his eyes narrowing into slits. “What was that for?” Merrick whispered harshly, his voice low but edged with fury. “You don’t just go kissing people like that. She’s not that kind of woman.”
His words carried the weight of his concern, like a big brother shielding his sister from the world. Merrick had always been her rock, the one who made her feel safe in a sea of uncertainties.
Corren didn’t flinch. Instead, he smiled wider, unfazed by the interruption. “Relax, Merrick,” he replied calmly, his tone light but sincere. “I just got carried away. I mean, she solved a problem we’ve all been struggling with for weeks-in just a few seconds. She must be a genius. And honestly? I think I’m already in love with her.”
The word “love” hit Cassienne like a gentle wave crashing over her. It echoed in her mind, making her breath catch. Love? From a man she had just met? She wondered if she really deserved to be loved by someone like him — playful, successful, full of life.
Why did such simple words have such a huge impact on her heart? Maybe because no one had ever said anything close to that before. Not in a way that felt real.
Well, there had been that one time, long ago. A little boy who promised he loved her, swore he’d never want any other girl. His eyes had been so earnest back then, full of childhood dreams. But that boy was a man now, and he had chosen a different path-one that left her behind, aching with unspoken hurt.

The memory stung, a quiet pain that had lingered for years. It was time for her to move on, to let go of those old shadows and step into something new. This kiss, this moment-it felt like the universe nudged her forward.
Merrick sighed, his anger softening just a bit as he glanced back at Cassienne. “I’m sorry about that, Cassienne,” he said gently, his voice apologetic. “But let me properly introduce you to my boss and business partner, Corren Thornwyck. He’s the CEO of Coralreach Tech, and yeah, he’s a very playful fellow. Always jumping into things headfirst.”
Then Merrick turned to Corren, pride shining in his eyes as he made the introduction. “Corren, meet my friend Cassienne-the woman I’ve told you about. The simplest way I can describe her is that she’s a tech genius. Pure and simple.”
Corren’s face lit up with genuine admiration. “Wow, that was incredible,” he said, his voice warm and enthusiastic. He held out his hand again. “Can I have that handshake now?”
Cassienne managed a small smile, her shyness melting a little under his charm. She placed her hand in his, and he lifted it gracefully, pressing a soft kiss to the back of it. The touch was light, respectful, but it sent another flutter through her stomach. Her cheeks flushed hot with a blush, the heat spreading down her neck. She felt exposed, yet oddly cherished.
Merrick noticed immediately and stepped in to break the awkward tension. He placed a gentle hand on Cassienne’s shoulder and guided her away from Corren. “Come on, let’s give you a breather,” he murmured, shooting Corren a warning look.
