Ray arrived at the bar earlier than Dreston. The place was quiet, just as he expected. The lighting was low, warm enough to soften every corner of the room. Soft music flowed in the background, steady and unobtrusive, keeping conversations private without forcing silence.

It was the kind of place people came to talk without being overheard, where deals were made with calm voices and understood consequences.

A hostess stepped forward as soon as he entered. Good evening, sir.

Ray gave a slight nod. I’ll take a private table.

Of course.

She led him through the main area toward a more secluded section at the far end. The seating there was arranged with intention. Enough distance between tables to ensure privacy, yet close enough to maintain the atmosphere of the room.

This will be perfect,Ray said.

Can I get you anything to start?

Ray glanced briefly at the empty seat across from him. I’ll wait for my friend,he replied. But bring two glasses and whiskey. Keep the bottle ready.

Yes, sir.

Ray settled into the sofa, leaning back slightly as his gaze swept across the room. Everything was controlled here, in fact it was safe, unlike what was waiting outside.

A waiter approached shortly after, placing two crystal glasses on the table along with a bottle of aged whiskey. Would you like me to pour, sir?

Ray shook his head. I’ll wait,he said.

The waiter nodded respectfully and stepped away.

Ray rested his arm along the back of the sofa, his thoughts already drifting. The conversation with his mother lingered, about another Enemy. Someone unseen and dangerous.

His jaw tightened slightly. This was no longer simple as he had thought. Somehow, he is happy that they were aware rather than being caught unaware.

The entrance door opened and Dreston walked in with the same quiet authority he had always carried. His presence drew subtle attention, but nothing disruptive. He acknowledged no one, his focus already set on Ray.

Their eyes met.

Dreston walked toward him, his steps steady. You’re early,he said as he reached the table.

Ray smirked faintly. You’re late,he replied.

Dreston took the seat opposite him without hesitation. Still the same,he said.

Always,Ray answered.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other, not as businessmen and not as men carrying pressure. They looked at one another as friends who had known each other long before any of this existed. Which

was true.

The waiter returned quietly. Gentlemen.

Ray gestured slightly. Go ahead.

The whiskey was poured with carefulness. Dreston gave a brief nod. Thank you.

The waiter stepped away.

Ray picked up his glass and lifted it slightly. To survival,he said.

Dreston let out a quiet breath and lifted his own. To control,he replied. Their glasses touched lightly, and they drank.

For a moment, the conversation stayed easy and light. Nothing serious at the beginning.

You look like hell,Ray said casually.

Dreston smirked faintly. You look worse.

Ray chuckled. Fair.

Dreston leaned back slightly.

How’s the hospital?he asked.

Still standing,Ray replied. My parents are still working like they’re trying to outlive time.

Dreston shook his head slightly.

That sounds about right.

A brief silence followed. Then Ray set his glass down slowly, his expression shifted. I spoke to my mother today,he said.

Dreston’s eyes sharpened immediately. The shift was instant. And?he asked.

Ray leaned forward slightly, his tone no longer casual. What I’m about to say, you need to take it seriously.

Dreston’s posture straightened. I always do.

Ray held his gaze. Tina is not your real problem.

Dreston did not react immediately. But his grip on the glass tightened slightly. What do you mean?” he

asked.

Ray exhaled slowly. She has her own motives, yes,he said. She wants you, she wants power. That part is clear. Then he paused, But she is not the one driving this.

Dreston’s brows drew together. “You’re saying someone is behind her?

Exactly.The answer came without hesitation.

Dreston leaned back slightly, his mind already working. My father once mentioned it, but that doesn’t make sense,he said. Tina doesn’t let herself be used.

She’s not being used,” Ray replied. She’s being guided.

Dreston’s gaze darkened.

Someone is feeding her information,” Ray continued. “Not everything. Just enough to make her dangerous. Someone who knows your family and has a score to settle. That is the way I’m looking at it.”

Dreston’s thoughts aligned quickly. He thought of her confidence, timing and pressure. She knows things she shouldn’t,he said quietly.

Ray nodded. Exactly.Another silence followed.

Dreston ran a hand through his hair, his mind racing. If Tina is not the end of this,he said, then she’s just the beginning of it, right?

That’s what I’m telling you,Ray replied.

Dreston leaned forward now, his voice lower. Who is this person?

Ray held his gaze. I don’t know yet. That answer did not sit well. But my mother is handling the case,” Ray added. And she’s certain this is bigger than it looks.

Dreston exhaled slowly. Everything was shifting.

You need to be careful,Ray said.

Dreston’s lips curved faintly. I don’t have the luxury of being careful,he replied. I’m already in it.

Ray studied him. Then don’t make the mistake they’re waiting for.

Dreston’s eyes narrowed slightly. What mistake?

Ray’s voice dropped. The one that gives them exactly what they want.

Silence settled again.

Dreston reached for his glass and took a slow sip. Then he set it down. I won’t give them that,he said.

Ray believed him. But belief did not erase risk.

Dreston stood. I have something to take care of,he said.

Ray nodded. Keep your guard up.

Always,Dreston replied, he turned and walked out.

Ray remained seated for a moment longer. His gaze fixed on the glass in front of him. He knows that this was not over, not even close.

Outside, the night air was cool. Dreston stepped out of the bar, his mind heavier than before.

Someone else? That thought stayed with him. He moved toward his car, then paused. Across the street, a sleek black vehicle came to a stop.

When the door opened. A woman stepped out. She moved with quiet confidence, her posture straight, her presence controlled. Her dark hair fell effortlessly over her shoulders, and even in the low light, there was something about her that drew attention.
