When Love Finds Its Way Back (Cassienne and Dreston) novel Chapter 281

Chapter Two Hundred And EightyOne: I Will Go With My Husband

Later that night, Cassienne Rhodes was about to leave with Corren Thornwyck when someone suddenly grabbed her wrist. She stopped immediately and turned around. What happened?she asked.

Dreston Tremont did not answer her right away. His gaze moved past her and settled on Corren instead.

Then he smiled faintly.

Mr. Thornwyck,he said calmly, I do not think I properly thanked you for saving my wife the other day. You are truly a good friend to the family.

Cassienne’s eyes widened instantly.

Wife?

Why would he say that here?

Corren looked equally confused, though he hid it better. I only did what any sane man would do,he replied.

Dreston nodded slowly. And I appreciate it,he said. But if you do not mind, I would like to take my wife

home now.

Before Corren could speak, Cassienne stepped in quickly. Dreston, you do not have to call me your wife

anymore-

You are my wife,Dreston cut in immediately. His tone was calm, but firm enough to stop her. Nothing has changed, Cassienne. And honestly, I am tired of this game we started. Come with me.

Corren frowned slightly. Now he was completely lost. Excuse me,he said carefully. What exactly is going on here?

Cassienne turned toward him immediately. She could already feel the tension building, and this was not the place for explanations. It is okay, she said softly. You should go home, Corren. I will talk to you later.

Corren looked from her to Dreston. There were too many things he did not understand. But one thing was clear enough. Cassienne still had feelings for Dreston. And Dreston clearly still had feelings for her too. What he did not know was that they were already married again, and secretly trying to keep it hidden from the public.

For a moment, Corren wanted to argue. But he stopped himself. Cassienne had security around her. Besides, she looked calm, not afraid. Okay,he finally said. We will talk later.

He turned and walked away.

Cassienne watched him leave before turning to her bodyguards. I will go with my husband, she said quietly. You can leave.

The guards nodded respectfully and stepped away without questions. Now it was just the two of them.

Cassienne folded her arms slowly and looked at Dreston. So what now?

We need to talk,he replied immediately. And not here.

His hand settled gently behind her back as he led her toward the waiting car. Steve opened the door for them and nodded politely. Mrs. Tremont.

Cassienne smiled faintly at him before getting into the car. Dreston followed right after her, and the door closed behind them.

The drive was quiet. Not uncomfortable. But heavy.

Cassienne sat beside him, staring out the window while the city lights moved past them in blurred reflections. She could feel Dreston’s presence beside her without even looking at him. And strangely enough, that familiar feeling still affected her. And she hated it.

Because no matter how upset she became with him, her heart still responded to him too easily. 1

Beside her, Dreston remained silent. But his thoughts were far from calm. Tonight had changed too much. The way he reacted when Cassienne almost fell. The way he held her in front of everyone. The way he could not stop himself from watching her.

And Corren.

His jaw tightened slightly at the thought.

Seeing another man stand beside his wife so comfortably did not sit well with him at all. Especially not Corren. And the worst part was that he could not even complain about it openly because this arrangement was partly his fault too.

The car finally stopped.

Cassienne frowned slightly when she looked outside. This was not her penthouse. And it was not the

hotel suite either.

Dreston brought her home. To the Tremont mansion. Cassienne did not question him. She simply followed him inside.

The moment the front door closed behind them, she walked straight inside and dropped her purse on one of the couches and turned toward him immediately. “What are you doing?she asked.

Instead of answering, Dreston loosened his tie slightly and walked toward the kitchen. Are you hungry?

Cassienne stared at him in disbelief before following after him. That is not an answer to my question,

Dreston.

He opened the refrigerator and took out a bottle of water before shutting it again. Then he finally looked at her. I am tired,he said quietly.

Cassienne frowned. Tired of what?

This game,he replied immediately. I am tired of pretending. I am tired of staying away from you. And I am tired of acting like another man has the right to stand beside my wife while I watch.

Cassienne blinked. So that was it. Jealousy.

Dreston stepped closer until he was standing right in front of her. You have been distancing yourself from me, Cass,” he continued. We agreed to do this together. But instead, you completely shut me out.

Cassienne wrapped her arms around herself and leaned lightly against the marble counter. For a moment, she did not reply. Because part of her knew he was right. But another part of her was still hurt.

So tell me what is going on,Dreston said. You cancelled every meeting we planned. Every time I tried to see you, you avoided me. Why?

Cassienne closed her eyes briefly before opening them again. You announced your engagement to Tina right after I was attacked.

The words landed quietly. But heavily.

Yes, I agreed to the plan, she continued. But we still had two weeks before that deadline. You didn’t even tell me what you were about to do.

Her voice remained calm. But the pain underneath it was obvious.

And after the attack, she added softly, you never came to check if I was okay.

Dreston’s expression changed immediately. Cass-

No,” she cut in gently. Listen to me first.

There was silence for a brief moment before she continued. You were acting strange too, Dreston. Not just me.
