Chapter Two Hundred And Ninety–One: Just Don’t Trust This Silence

Inside the Tremont mansion, Cassienne Rhodes stood near the expansive kitchen counter, quietly reviewing documents on her tablet. The atmosphere throughout the grand home had shifted once again. It wasn’t completely peaceful yet, but it felt noticeably lighter, warmer, and more intimate than it had in recent weeks. For the first time in days, the constant pressure that had been squeezing around her chest had eased, even if only slightly, allowing her to breathe a little easier.
Behind her, Dreston Tremont walked into the kitchen already dressed for the day, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly as always, every line sharp and impeccable. But instead of heading straight for breakfast or his usual morning routine, he walked directly toward his wife with purposeful strides.
Cassienne didn’t even bother looking up from her screen. “Stop looking at me that way,” she said calmly, though the corners of her mouth twitched with amusement.
Dreston stepped behind her without hesitation and wrapped one strong arm around her waist, pulling her back gently against his solid chest. “I’m married,” he murmured, voice low and warm against her ear. “Let me enjoy my wife.”
Cassienne smiled faintly despite herself, leaning into his embrace. “You have work to do.”
“So do you,” he replied smoothly, his hand resting protectively over the gentle swell of her belly. “But somehow you don’t see me complaining about it.”
Cassienne finally turned toward him slightly, her eyes meeting his with a playful challenge. “You complain all the time.”
“That’s because you keep leaving me,” he countered, the words carrying a hint of genuine longing
beneath the teasing tone.
Cassienne laughed softly and shook her head. Honestly, this man had become unusually clingy lately. Not that she minded in the slightest. Pregnancy had only intensified his protective instincts, turning every moment apart into something he seemed to endure rather than accept.
Dreston leaned down and pressed a lingering kiss to the side of her neck, his lips warm against her skin, before resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. “You’re coming home early tonight.”
“That sounds less like a request and more like an order,” she observed.
“It isn’t a request,” he confirmed without apology.
Cassienne raised an eyebrow at him. “Bossy.”
“Pregnant with my child.” He shrugged calmly, a small possessive smile touching his lips. “I earned the right.”
Cassienne stared at him for a second before laughing again, the sound bright and genuine. God, she had missed this version of them–softer, more open, wrapped in quiet domestic warmth even amid the lingering shadows.

But despite the tenderness between them, Cassienne still noticed the undercurrent of tension in Dreston. He had become more alert lately, more protective, almost hyper–vigilant.
Even now, his phone rested on the counter beside them, several unread security notifications lighting up the screen in quick succession. Steve had already doubled her security detail, and this morning alone, Dreston had personally reviewed the exact route she would take to Nerox Technology, cross–checking every detail.
Cassienne studied him quietly for a long moment. “You’re thinking too much again.”
Dreston met her gaze briefly, his dark eyes revealing layers of worry he tried to hide. “Maybe.”
Cassienne reached for his hand gently, threading her fingers through his. “DT.”
The softness in her voice immediately weakened him, as it always did. Dreston sighed quietly before pulling her closer and pressing a tender kiss to her forehead, lingering there as if drawing strength from her presence. “I just don’t trust this silence.”
Cassienne understood immediately. There was still danger out there–unseen, unspoken, but very real. Neither of them spoke about it further, but both felt the weight of that truth hanging between them. The danger had not disappeared. It was only hiding, waiting for the right moment to strike again.
A few minutes later, Dreston personally escorted Cassienne outside toward her waiting convoy. Steve already stood nearby, speaking quietly into his earpiece while the team of bodyguards meticulously checked the surroundings, their movements precise and professional. The morning sun glinted off the polished black vehicles lined up in the driveway.
Cassienne looked mildly amused as she took in the heightened security. “You’re treating me like a president now.”
Dreston opened the car door for her with calm authority. “You’re more important,” he said simply, the words carrying absolute conviction.
Cassienne smiled softly before stepping into the vehicle. But before the door closed completely, Dreston leaned in closer, his hand gently cupping her cheek. “Call me when you arrive.”
“Yes, husband.”
That single word softened his entire expression immediately, warmth flooding his usually intense gaze. He stepped back only when the door was securely shut, standing tall and watchful as the convoy finally pulled away from the mansion. Dreston remained rooted in place, eyes fixed on the vehicles until the last one disappeared from sight, his jaw tight with unspoken resolve.
Meanwhile, across the city at the private departure entrance of the airport, Daisy Noah stood with her brother beside her. The atmosphere between them was relaxed and comfortable, a welcome contrast to the heavier tensions elsewhere. Her brother adjusted the sleeve of his expensive coat before looking
down at her with familiar amusement.

“I will expect to see you in two days,” he said.
Daisy folded her arms dramatically. “And let Mother interrogate me for six hours straight? Absolutely
not.”
He laughed quietly, the sound warm and affectionate. “You know she misses you.”
Daisy’s expression softened slightly despite her playful resistance. “I know. But don’t worry. I will be there.”
A brief, comfortable silence followed before her brother reached forward and pulled her into a quick but heartfelt hug. Despite Daisy’s carefree and playful personality, the bond between them was obvious- strong, protective, and deeply real.
“Take care of yourself,” he told her quietly, squeezing her once more.
“You too.”
He smiled faintly before finally walking toward the private boarding entrance. Daisy watched him disappear into the terminal, exhaling softly once he was gone. Then she reached for her phone, her fingers hovering briefly over Ray Simpson’s contact.
For some reason, she suddenly wanted to hear his voice. Maybe because things still felt strange and unresolved between them. Maybe because he had been distant lately. Or maybe simply because she missed him–the teasing, the flirting, the easy connection they once shared.
Before she could press call, a familiar voice spoke behind her.
“You look disappointed.”
Daisy turned immediately, a smile forming on her lips.
Ray stood a few feet away, wearing a dark coat, one hand resting casually on the handle of his luggage. He still looked handsome, still calm, but something about him felt annoyingly unreadable today.
“Well,” Daisy said lightly as she slipped her phone back into her bag, “look who finally decided to stop ignoring me.”
Ray smiled slightly. Only slightly.
Daisy noticed it, and somehow that small difference unsettled her. Her eyes dropped to the luggage beside him. “You’re traveling?”
“Mm.”
“Where to?”
“To see my parents.” His tone remained calm. Polite. But unmistakably distant.
Daisy frowned slightly. “You’re acting weird.”

Ray looked at her quietly for a moment before replying. “I’m just tired.”

Something about that answer bothered her immediately, ringing false in her chest. But before she could press him further, Ray nodded once. “I should go.”
And just like that, he walked past her without another word–no teasing remark, no lingering look, no flirtatious smile. Nothing.
Daisy stood there watching him leave with visible confusion etched across her face. That was unlike Ray. Very unlike him.
For a moment, she almost called him back. But eventually she simply shook her head lightly. “If you want
to be dramatic, then fine,” she muttered under her breath.
Still, the strange, uneasy feeling remained lodged in her chest long after he had disappeared into the
terminal.
