Cassienne and Dreston arrived at Emily’s place just as sunset painted the sky in soft hues of gold and rose. The moment they stepped out of the car, Emily walked out of the foyer, her face lighting up with a bright, heartfelt smile. “Finally, my children have come to see me.”
Emily’s voice carried that familiar warmth Dreston had missed so much, especially coming from her. It wrapped around them like a comforting embrace after weeks of tension and uncertainty.
“Mother,” Cassienne said, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes as emotion surged through her.
Behind her, Dreston smiled softly. He was genuinely happy to see his mother-in-law, who had long since become his second mother. Emily embraced Cassienne first, pulling her close with gentle, motherly love. “Stop it, tears are not good for your condition. Besides, you don’t need them, my child.”
Cassienne chuckled softly, the sound light and relieved. Dreston stood watching the mother and daughter with quiet affection. Emily eventually pulled away from her daughter and stepped closer to him. Her arms wrapped around Dreston in a warm hug. “Stop behaving like a child, Dreston. You know how much I love you, son.”
Dreston returned the hug tightly, and laughter filled the air around them, bright and genuine.
…….
Much later, Cassienne and Dreston had fully settled in. Emily had bombarded them with thousands of questions about the baby, their relationship, their work, and so much more. The entire house felt alive with happiness. Even the two maids, Anna and the new woman Cassienne still didn’t know, seemed genuinely pleased to have them there. The atmosphere was warm, comforting, and filled with the kind of normalcy they had both been craving.
“I hope you’re staying longer?” Emily asked during dinner, her eyes hopeful as she passed another serving of Cassienne’s favorite dish.
“We’re going back in the morning,” Dreston replied gently. “The visit wasn’t properly planned. We missed you and thought of seeing your beautiful face.”
Emily nodded, understanding shining in her eyes. They didn’t mention Tina’s case, and even though Emily clearly sensed that something else had brought them to Lisbourn, she didn’t press. She let it go. All she wanted for her children was peace of heart, and nothing more.
Dinner went well, filled with light conversation and shared stories. Eventually, Emily retired to her room. Cassienne and Dreston made their way upstairs to Cassienne’s old bedroom, which had been beautifully re-decorated since Emily’s return. All through the evening downstairs, they had carefully avoided mentioning anything close to what had happened to Cassienne. They didn’t want to scare her.
“Finally,” Dreston said, closing the bedroom door behind them with a soft click.
“That went well,” Cassienne added as she sat on the edge of the bed. “She was happy.”
“That was obvious,” Dreston replied, beginning to undress. “But she still looked like she was hiding something from us. The Emily I know is much more jolly than what I experienced today.”
“Are we any different from her?” Cassienne asked softly.
Dreston paused, considering her words. “I guess you’re right about that. But I am also worried about her wellbeing because it matters.”
Cassienne could only smile, warmth spreading through her chest at his concern. Later, as they prepared to call it a night, the same thought crossed both their minds. Garry.
“About Garry,” Cassienne started as they lay tangled in each other’s arms, “any idea who might want to kidnap someone like him?”
