Joseph still had his phone in his hand when the waiting room fell silent again.
Justice Elena’s words continued moving inside his head, but he could not hold on to them properly. She had found something, something important, and something that could finally lead them to the remaining person behind all of this. Under normal circumstances, Joseph would have moved immediately. He would have asked questions, given instructions, and started coordinating with her.
But this was not a normal night, his son was still behind those doors.
His daughter-in-law was sitting only a few feet away from him with a pale face, one hand resting protectively over her stomach, and the other gripping Jessica’s hand as though it was the only thing keeping her upright.
Joseph looked toward the operating room again. How could he leave? How could any father leave while his son was still fighting for his life?
Steve stood near the corner with his phone pressed to his ear, quietly speaking to someone from the investigation team. Sheila sat beside Abigail, rubbing her back gently as Abigail cried without making a sound. Nora was unusually quiet. Jessica sat close to Cassienne, looking as terrified as everyone else. Garry sat farther away, his face bruised and his broken nose already treated, but his eyes remained fixed on the floor.
The waiting room was full of people, yet it felt painfully empty because the one person everyone was waiting for was not there.
Dreston.
Cassienne had not spoken much since she arrived. She only asked questions when the doctors came out, and every answer they gave her only made her fear worse.
Still, she refused to leave.
Mrs. Rawlings had tried once, very gently, to convince her to rest in a private room. Cassienne had looked at her with eyes full of pain and said only one thing. “I will rest when my husband opens his eyes.”
After that, no one tried again.
Another hour passed.
Then another.
Time lost meaning inside that waiting room. Every footstep made everyone look up. Every movement near the operating room doors made hearts stop. Every passing nurse carried the weight of possible news.
Finally, the doors opened, causing everyone to stand at once.
The surgeon stepped out with two other doctors, including Ray. His face was serious, tired, and careful in that professional way that immediately frightened people.
Cassienne moved first.
She was standing before anyone could stop her. “How is my husband?”
Her voice was low, but everyone heard it.
The surgeon looked at her, then briefly toward Joseph before returning his attention to Cassienne.
