By the following morning, the investigation had entered its final stage.
Justice Elena had made something clear before leaving the station the previous night. Alessandro Virelli’s arrest was not the same as a conviction, and the emotional satisfaction of finally identifying the man behind the conspiracy could not be allowed to weaken the case against him.
Every statement had to be verified. Every financial transfer had to be traced. Every communication had to be placed in the correct order.
The investigators worked through the night, comparing Donatus Richardson’s confession with the statements given by the tattooed man and his female accomplice. Records of meetings, phone calls, travel dates, payments, and property access were brought together until the separate crimes no longer looked separate.
They formed one long chain.
Alessandro avoided placing his name on the money, but Donatus did.
He avoided communicating with the kidnappers, but Donatus did.
He had avoided giving direct orders in language that could easily be used against him. But he continued meeting Donatus even after violence became part of the operation. He continued asking questions about Cassienne.
By midday, the complete case file had been prepared for the prosecution.
Justice Elena stood inside the conference room with Joseph and Steve while the lead investigator placed the final documents on the table.
“We have enough to proceed,” he said.
Joseph looked at him carefully. “Against all of them?”
“Yes.”
The investigator opened the first file.
“Donatus Richardson will face charges connected to kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, conspiracy, attempted abduction, financing criminal activity, and the attack intended to silence Tina Ackley.”
Joseph’s expression remained hard.
The investigator continued. “The tattooed man and the female accomplice will face charges based on their direct involvement. Their cooperation will be considered, but it will not erase what they did.”
“And Tina?” Steve asked.
The investigator opened another file. “Tina Ackley will be charged for hiring the man who attacked Cassienne Tremont. Corren Thornwyck was injured because of that act. Her statement and the records obtained from her communications support the charge.”
Joseph lowered his eyes briefly.
Tina had nearly destroyed several lives because she had chosen bitterness over truth. She had been manipulated, but she had also made her own decisions.
That distinction mattered.
Justice Elena looked toward the final file. “And Alessandro?”
The lead investigator’s expression became more serious. “Conspiracy charges will proceed, along with charges connected to criminal solicitation and participation in an organized plan. The prosecution will also review whether further charges can be supported by the complete evidence.”
Steve slowly nodded. “So he cannot simply walk away by saying he never transferred money.”
“No.”
The investigator closed the file.
“He can argue that Donatus acted independently. His lawyers almost certainly will. But we now have Donatus’s testimony, the communication history, the timing of the meetings, Alessandro’s knowledge of the crimes, and his continued involvement after those crimes occurred.”
Justice Elena added quietly, “And we have evidence showing that the history Alessandro used to influence Donatus was false.”
Joseph looked at her.
The weight of that statement settled heavily inside him.
For more than twenty years, Ethan Rhodes had carried the blame for something he had tried to prevent.
