When Love Finds Its Way Back (Cassienne and Dreston) novel Chapter 66

Chapter SixtySix: Unless Your Brain Is Damaged. Yes.

The moment froze in Cassienne’s mind, pulling her back to a memory she had tried for years to bury.

It was in high school.

That was when Tina had already won Dreston’s heart.

Cassienne remembered walking beside Tina that day, the hallway loud with laughter. Neither of them noticed the banana peel on the floor. She still didn’t know how it got there, but it was thereand they both stepped on it at the same time.

What happened next had shocked her.

Tina fell hard. She screamed and ended up spraining her ankle.

But Cassienne never touched the floor.

Dreston had been fast. He was so fast that he reached her in time, his arms catching her before she fell, shielding her like instinct guided him. Cassienne could still remember the feel of his hands, the shock in her chest, the way her heart had raced afterward.

She never forgot that moment.

For a long time, she held on to it. It became one of the many reasons she believed that, deep down, Dreston cared. Maybe he was just confused. Or maybe he was just distracted.

But now, standing here, the memory felt bitter.

This time was different.

Tina hadn’t fallen. No, because Tina was the reason Cassienne almost fell.

If Dreston hadn’t reacted quickly, the fall would have been painful. The impact would have been bad.

Cassienne wanted to scream. She wanted to push Dreston away and demand why he was holding her so closely. But she couldn’t. She knew the truth. He hadn’t touched her out of desire. He had caught her to stop her from falling.

Still, Tina looked like she was about to murder someone.

And thisthis kind of dramawas exactly what Cassienne wanted to avoid. She had just returned to work. She didn’t want attention. She didn’t want unnecessary drama. She definitely didn’t want any misunderstanding,

Thank you,Cassienne said calmly, breaking the heavy silence, I’m fine now.

Dreston blinked, snapping out of whatever moment had held him frozen. He nodded and slowly released his grip on her waist, making sure she was standing firmly before stepping back.

Be careful next time,he said.

Cassienne nodded. Then she looked at Tina.

Her face wasn’t just red with angerit was twisted with fury.

Cassienne raised a brow slightly, silently asking for space.

Tina glared at her, her fingers curling as if she wanted to do something reckless. For a brief second, it looked like

she might actually grab Cassienne.

Dreston’s voice cut through the tension.

Tina, you’re blocking the door.

That was the only reason Tina stepped aside.

Cassienne didn’t say another word. She walked out quietly, her heels clicking softly against the floor as she moved down the hallway without looking back.

Once Cassienne was gone, Dreston turned and returned to his desk.

Tina scoffed and followed him inside, slamming the door shut behind her. The sound was so loud that even Dreston flinched.

What was that?Tina spat.

Dreston didn’t look at her. He picked up a file and returned to his work as if she wasn’t standing there.

You should have knocked, Tina,he said calmly.

I’ve never knocked before,Tina snapped. What is going on with you?

Dreston finally looked up, his gaze sharp and unreadable.

I should be asking you that question,he replied. This is work hours. You can’t just barge into my office whenever you like.

Tina’s eyes widened.

Dreston had never complained about this before. Not for once.

What changed?she demanded.

You should go back to your office,Dreston continued. I have a meeting to prepare for, and I’m already running late.

Tina stared at him in disbelief. You’re walking me out?

Dreston sighed and folded his arms across his chest.

Can you stop this drama?he said flatly. I don’t have time for it. Please leave. I need to work.

The words were simple.

But to Tina, they felt like a slap.

Dreston had always been gentle with her. He had never been this direct. And now he was cold. She blamed only one

person.

Cassienne.

If Cassienne hadn’t come back, none of this would be happening.

Without another word, Tina turned and walked out of the office. This time, the door closed behind her softly, but the damage had already been done.

Cassienne was on a phone call when her office door suddenly burst openno knock, no warning, no permission. 1

She had been standing by the floortoceiling glass window, watching the city below while listening carefully to the person on the other end of the line. The sharp sound of the door opening made her turn immediately.

Standing a few steps inside the office was Tina Ackley.

Cassienne’s expression didn’t change, but her attention shifted fully.

I’ll call you back,Cassienne said calmly into the phone. I need to handle something urgent.

She ended the call and slowly turned to face Tina.

What do you think you’re doing, barging into my office like this?Cassienne asked, her voice low but sharp.

Tina’s face was twisted with bitterness. She walked forward and stopped at the center of the office, her eyes burning with anger.

Do you think I’m stupid?Tina snapped. For five yearsfive whole yearsyou married my man. And what did you get from it? Hatred. Nothing but hatred.

Cassienne folded her arms across her chest and leaned slightly against the desk, listening without interruption.

Tina continued, her voice rising. Even after everything, he divorced you. And yet, here you are. Still refusing to leave us alone. You’re so desperate, Cassienne. So pathetic. Still looking for a way to crawl back into his life.

Cassienne remained silent.

Dreston and I are getting married soon,Tina went on, her lips curling. And when that happens, I will personally throw you out of this office. I don’t want you anywhere near us.

She took a breath, her voice shaking with rage.

Your presence once cost me my unborn child. And I will not let you destroy this one I’m carrying now.

She paused, then added coldly, It seems you ruin everything good that comes near you. So go back to wherever you crawled out from. You are not welcome here.

Silence filled the office.

Tina waited for a reply, but it never came.

She expected anger. Tears. Or any reactionanything.

But Cassienne didn’t move.

She stood there with her arms still folded, her face calm and unreadable, her gaze steady on Tina. The lack of response unsettled Tina more than any insult ever could.

Finally, Cassienne spoke.

Are you done?she asked simply.
