Jackson hadn’t pulled the sample text off Facebook. Instead, he used a page from Solomon’s file—the section that introduced the technology’s function.
Kelly and Celeste both stepped forward.
"Hieroglyphics?"
Mr. Jackson, weren’t you supposed to be working on intelligent machinery? Why would you be studying hieroglyphics?
Kelly, despite her stellar grades, didn’t know a thing about them. If she was lost, then there was no way the half-baked Celeste should know either.
Yet Celeste suddenly said, "This one—I recognize it."
Kelly stiffened in shock.
Jackson’s eyes lit up, though he didn’t celebrate just yet. He pointed at a symbol none of their team had managed to decode. "Then what’s this?"
"‘Axis,’ I think." Celeste wrote out the English.
"And this one?"
"‘Wind.’"
"This?"
"‘Force.’"
Jackson pointed out five different symbols from the technical file, and Celeste named every one. More importantly, once substituted in, the sentences actually made sense.
For a moment, he was beside himself with joy.
Kelly’s face went pale.
Hayes Corp’s first choice was clearly Miss Q. Now the second candidate had become Celeste. Meanwhile she, the proud academic star of Haven High, was being pushed to the bottom, unnoticed.
Celeste gave her a triumphant look. These symbols she only knew because she had once learned a few things from Taylor. Otherwise, she would have been just as lost.
Eagerly, Jackson pulled out another page of technical details and pointed out more unfamiliar symbols. This time Celeste froze.
She had never seen these at all.
But she couldn’t afford to lose her newfound value. "They look familiar… I can’t place them right now. Could I take them home to study?"
Luther chimed in quickly, "Hieroglyphics aren’t something an average person can memorize on sight. Since Celeste can recognize some, let her research more. She might translate them yet."
Right now, he just wanted to restore Haven High’s image after Serena’s disgrace.
Jackson thought it over. That reasoning made sense. He agreed.
