Quinton paid for all six uncut gems.
Serena held the one she’d picked and looked at Craig. “You said you’d give me one of the stones.”
Now that he’d won, Craig was in a good mood. “Pick whichever one you want.”
He even generously offered her the two stones he had picked himself, but Serena wasn’t interested.
Instead, she went straight for the one with the highest acquisition price.
Such an obvious grab for value didn’t sit well with most of the others.
Kelly sneered. “I already looked at that one earlier. Odds are it’s junk. Fifty grand isn’t cheap, Serena. I’d suggest you pick a different one.”
“This one’s better,” Serena said calmly. “Better than the one you’re holding.”
Kelly nearly burst out laughing. “Mine is solid green. Imperial green, at that. Yours just has a faint touch of color. Even if it turns out to be decent, you can’t compare the hue.”
Craig’s friends looked confused. “Is your new cousin not familiar with how valuable color is?” Even glass-type jade without color was worth less.
No one in their right mind would compare a stone with a hint of pale green to a full-bodied imperial green.
No doubt about it—Kelly’s stone was the only one in the bunch that reached a ten-thousand-dollar market value.
“Why don’t we make a bet?” Quinton suggested, always eager to stir the pot. “Let’s cut them both and see which one’s more valuable. I’ll be the bookie. Bet on Kelly and you get one-to-one odds. Bet on Serena, and it’s two-to-one.”
It couldn’t have been more blatantly insulting.
“Mr. Quinton is offering free money. Wouldn’t it be rude not to take him up on it?”
One by one, the guys pulled out their cards and placed them on Kelly’s side.
Even Craig did the same. But seeing that Serena’s side was completely empty, with not a single supporter, made him hesitate.
Serena’s face didn’t change. “I’ve got good luck.”
Craig’s jaw tightened. “I’m not giving Quinton any free money.”
Serena said nothing.
It was hard being the good guy.
Every single card went to Kelly’s side. Not one person backed Serena. The whole room felt stiff and uncomfortable.
Then Sebastian stood up.
He pulled out a card and placed it on Serena’s side.
“One million dollars.”
He said it casually.
Everyone turned and looked at him like he’d lost his mind.
You’re just the school nurse’s friend. Can you act like you know your place? Enough with the pretending.
