The moment he opened his eyes, the entire grand lobby seemed to freeze. Just seconds ago, the greeters had been whispering among themselves, the security guards were lazily pacing around, and the beautiful, elegant receptionists were still smiling as they checked people in. But now, they all straightened their backs in unison—spines stiff, fingers taut, not even daring to twitch.
Even the branch manager, someone Evervale City’s rich kids had barely seen before, came rushing over in a panic. He bowed at a full ninety degrees and offered a gift box with both hands to the girl standing there.
“We’re deeply sorry, Ms. Serena. We failed to take proper care of you today and caused you distress. Please accept this small token of apology.”
The entire room held its breath.
Even Maine instinctively tensed. He glanced at the man standing beside her—silent, unreadable, yet radiating an authority so intense that even the manager only dared to steal glances at him. There was no doubt: this was the guy he’d been sent to wait for.
He quickly pulled out his phone and snapped a picture.
Once the two were out of sight, he finally exhaled, nerves buzzing with excitement, and rushed back into Event Room 303.
“I got it!” he shouted, practically bursting at the seams. “I got a picture of that VIP—and the girl he brought with him! Damn, the way he walked in… total silence, but he shut down the whole floor. You guys know the manager, Sun Youfu? Looked like he was about to drop to his knees and beg! What the hell did those front desk girls do to get him so worked up?”
He passed his phone around, and with each new person who saw the photo, the expressions in the room darkened.
No f*cking way.
That wasn’t… the same guy who had just walked out of this room with Serena?
“Wait—you’re saying he’s the VIP?”
“Of course!” Maine blinked. “Who else could make someone like Sun Youfu grovel like that?”
Silence fell again.
Even the sound of breathing felt too loud.
“Kelly,” someone said, “you said he was your school nurse’s friend from Haven High?”
A school nurse’s friend has access to Azure Club? A place with verified real-name memberships? You don’t get in here just by flashing some fake Rolex.
How did none of them catch such a massive hole in the story?
“Kelly, what’s your school nurse’s background?”
The questions came at her all at once.
Kelly knew she couldn’t hide it anymore—but that didn’t mean she was about to give Serena any credit.
“Our school nurse has dual PhDs from Regency University and works under Hayes Corp.”
“Excuse me? And you didn’t think that was worth mentioning?!”

Kelly gave a humble smile. “Three of us from Haven made the shortlist. I wouldn’t say it was for me. But there’s something else… I probably shouldn’t say it, but you guys deserve to know. Yesterday I met Mr. Jackson from Hayes Corp.”
