Chapter 26 The trumpet Surprise

“Find it funny?”

Her voice was low and emotionless, yet it silenced the entire class, leaving a hint of apprehension in the air.

Shiloh awkwardly tried to smooth things over, “Every instrument deserves respect, and the trumpet is no exception!”

But still,

“Serena, can you actually play it?”

Serena thought for a moment, “I guess I know a little.”

Shiloh and the class fell silent.

Sidney had been waiting in her office, hoping Serena would come storming in to confront her, so she could use her high–and–mighty queenly aura to shame her. But no such confrontation

came.

As the welcome event’s final program lineup was being finalized, the list lay before Sidney. She quickly flipped to Serena’s entry. “She didn’t say anything?”

Morgan nearly rolled his eyes.

She already asked you for a backdoor favor, what more is there to say? But a trumpet at a welcome event? How could that even work?

Their director seemed determined to elevate Serena at all costs, even at the risk of spoiling the last welcome event.

“Nothing. I am following the director’s orders,” Morgan replied.

Sidney felt uneasy. She had gone out of her way to drive a wedge between Serena and her best friend and had even set her up with a trumpet performance. And Serena really isn’t going to say anything?

Dropping the program, Sidney made a special trip to the senior class area only to see Rowan, who should have shunned Serena, warmly holding her hand.

So much for that plan.

Morgan stared at the program for a long time before changing “Bird Symphony to the Phoenix” to another piece–a piece dramatic enough to make a lasting impression, possibly

leaving Serena with a lifetime of memories.

The staff member was puzzled, “What kind of new twist?”

Morgan pointed at the program, “Don’t publish the piece on the public program. It will heighten anticipation and curiosity. We’ll reveal it when the time comes; the reaction should be even better!”

“Such wisdom, Morgan!”

Determined not to let her new deskmate be ridiculed, Rowan used her next month’s allowance in advance—she even canceled an order for repair cream–to buy Serena a beautifully crafted trumpet. She also downloaded several live performances of “Bird Symphony to the Phoenix,” practicing with Serena whenever they had a moment.

Serena didn’t really want to practice, but the trumpet seemed to be worth a few thousand dollars.

By Thursday, when the dress rehearsal rolled around, Serena hadn’t shown up.

Mica called early in the morning.

“Serena, about the outfit Kelly was supposed to wear at the welcome event, I had ordered a custom Juniper Shirt, but now the supplier suddenly can’t deliver. Aren’t you acquainted with the designer? Could you help out?”

Asking Olivia made sense; Juniper Shirt outfits were highly sought after and hard to secure through normal channels. Besides, after Serena had cost their family 560,000 dollars, why not try to recover some costs?

Olivia was busy sorting out an outfit for Serena’s welcome event but glanced at the website Mica had sent–predictably, it was the most expensive dress of the new season.

“It seems every time you order a custom piece, Juniper Shirt lets you down.”

Mica stiffened. Is she implying I am causing trouble so Olivia would pay for the dresses?

“You know how hard it is to secure a Juniper Shirt; I’m not withholding your money. Just front the 41,000 dollars, and I’ll reimburse you!”

After I paid 560,000 dollars for your stepdaughter, you’re quibbling over 41,000 dollars? Ungrateful!

“It’s not about the money,” Olivia said seriously, a rarity for her. “A brand’s reputation is hard to build. Don’t make careless accusations.”

She was being lectured! You’re just a parasite feeding off us, what right do you have to lecture me? You love to mimic Ms. Valerie from Juniper Shirt; now you think you’re her? Having the same surname as her doesn’t mean anything!

“Are you getting the dress or not?” Mica was losing patience.

Olivia didn’t want to argue, “I’ll send it this afternoon.”

“Hmph!”

Mica hung up the phone.

Now that the main family needed them, she wasn’t about to show any courtesy.

You’ll take what I give you, and if not, try getting by without our help!

On Friday, the day of the actual performance, Olivia had prepared a support headband and even bought a small horn.

Thanos looked at Olivia disdainfully, “Don’t sit with me once we’re inside. I don’t want to know you!”

But once inside, he not only sat next to Olivia but also wore the support headband she had bought, complete with two cat ears that blinked “Serena” in lights.
