Leaning against the door, Indigo narrowed his eyes.
He didn’t go back in until Kelly returned the phone to his bag.
She took a sip of coffee, then looked up at him with a bright, innocent smile. “That was fast. You already worked it out?”
“Yeah,” Indigo nodded. “The Fern family is prepared to invest eight million dollars.”
Eight million…? Kelly nearly choked on her coffee.
That wasn’t pocket change.
If they could mass-produce Serenity Blend, the profit potential was enormous. Not to mention, partnering with a family from Ardenos would open new doors for the Morrows in that region.
Originally, she’d only used the Serenity Blend as bait to lure Indigo away so she could access his phone. But now? Now she was seriously tempted.
If the project succeeded, the Morrow family could rise even higher. The only problem? They didn’t have the formula for Serenity Blend at all…
“I’ll talk to my father about your proposal,” Kelly said, maintaining her poise with not a single crack in her performance.
Indigo gave no reaction.
Once they parted ways, he pulled out that phone and opened his hacker software. The background logs had recorded Kelly’s every move.
He squinted slightly when he saw what she had deleted.
Almost at the exact same time, the students who had gone to the Main Office website to look up Serena’s test paper discovered something infuriating:
"The site had been hacked."
And the freshly uploaded math files had been deleted.
All other subject results—including physics—were still intact in the database, yet only the math scores, the one subject with a faulty answer key, had vanished. It was impossible not to suspect that someone was covering their tracks.
Suddenly, the three AP science teachers who had stood up for Serena yesterday became everyone’s favorite targets.
“Cameron, didn’t you promise to livestream yourself eating your lesson plans?”
“Raymond, this is your so-called genius?”
“She’s a genius all right—a genius hacker. The Morrows probably paid big bucks to clean up her mess…”
The teachers who had vouched for Serena were now being publicly humiliated.
Shiloh stepped in just in time. “I saw Serena’s math paper myself. She lost ten points on that very question with the wrong key. She should’ve gotten a perfect score. If you don’t believe me, pull up her test!”
Sequoia’s heart clenched.
“You’re accusing her of cheating? Of hacking the Main Office? Where’s the proof? No proof, then shut the hell up! Say another word and I’ll sue!”
Building A fell silent.
It was the kind of silence that left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouths.
But Serena remained unfazed — she knew exactly how this world worked. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, and you can’t wake someone who’s only pretending to sleep.
The world has always been unkind to those who are too capable. When people can’t match your skill, they’d rather believe you’re lying. To them, anyone too exceptional must be cheating — must be a freak.
That was Team GF9 in a nutshell: a group of outliers, all quietly under the gaze of the mediocre, just waiting to be chopped down. It was always the same — the nail that sticks out gets hammered.
Indigo walked into the classroom, backpack slung over one shoulder. His gaze drifted naturally toward Serena.
She was on her phone, completely ignoring the chaos around her.
Of course he knew Serena hadn’t been the one to delete the math records from the Main Office. He also knew the online backlash was incredibly unfair to her. He even suspected that Kelly had purposely deleted only the math file to stir things up.
But he wasn’t obligated to clear Serena’s name.
Truth be told, if you placed Serena and Kelly on a scale, there was no question which side he would choose.
He’d pick Kelly — every time.
