When The Luna Broke Her Chains
Chapter 91 A Place Made Of Leftovers
[XENA]
I don’t remember falling asleep. One moment, I am staring at the moon, asking questions no one answers -the next, I’m waking up to dim light and stiff limbs, my cheek pressed awkwardly against the edge of the bed.
For a few seconds, I don’t move, my mind blank and peaceful. Once I blink, everything rushes back in like a damned waterfall—all of it.
The move. The gash. Oriel’s almost–slap. Cassian inexplicably becoming sick.
I sit up abruptly, breath catching as I look around the small, unfamiliar room. The narrow bed. The bare stone. The single chair.
Right. This is where I am now.
I drag a hand down my face and force myself to stand because there is no point lingering or pretending this is anything other than what it is. I open the door and step into the corridor, following the faint sound of voices.
When I enter the common room, they are already seated for breakfast, and from the look of it, they’re nearly done.
Lady Mara sits at the head, a little too upright, her plate nearly empty. Oriel lounges beside her, picking lazily at the last pieces of food. Cassian is nowhere to be seen.
Is he still sick?
Oriel glances up first, and a sneer replaces the bored look on her face as her nostrils flare. “See, it’s finally dawn in your world,” she taunts. A faint crease creeps between her brows that I haven’t seen before. It almost looks like discomfort… and caution?
Is she thinking of how I stopped her slap last night?
I shake my head. Deciding not to give her any more attention, I walk to the table and look at what remains: scraps, half–eaten pieces, cold bread, and a smear of something on a platter that has already been picked
over.
A pounding ache makes itself known in my stomach. I haven’t eaten since yesterday.
“This is all that’s left,” Oriel adds sweetly, gesturing at the table. “I hope you don’t mind.”
I meet her gaze and hold it until she appears visibly uncomfortable.
“Lower your eyes, Xena. Mother, tell her not to stare at me like that!”
Lady Mara scoffs. “My dear, she’ll need some time to understand that the pedestal she thought she was standing on has now been removed. It’s not long before she realizes how deep a fall it is.”
Ignoring them is bliss. Right now, it’s the only thing keeping nie sane.
