Chapter 92 He Knew I’d Come
[XENA]
“….so proud of you,” my stepmother says warmly.
All of them are here–my stepmother, my stepfather, Alpha Duran. And Axel. She’s mostly hidden behind them, but I can tell it’s Davina from her impossibly perfect curly brown hair.
Goddess, why do you keep testing me? Was my husband’s family not enough?
Davina replies softly, “Thank you, mother. It’s so good to see all of you here!”
Axel shrugs. “You know we couldn’t miss this. Although a warning would’ve been appreciated.”
Alpha Duran pats her head affectionately in a way that stabs at my heart. “You’re a part of the Luna Choosing Trials! To think that you stand a chance to become the Luna Queen of our kingdom is—”
“A chance?” Aurelia, my stepmother, cuts him off. “She will be the Queen. We always win, don’t we?” she asks confidently, grinning wider.
Alpha Duran nods hopefully. “I’m proud of you, my daughter.”
“We all are,” Axel remarks with a hint of a smile. “And we’re here to support you. The only problem is you’d need to request the–who is it? The Arch Luminist…? To kindly provide us with a space to stay.”
Davina exhales, backing away a little so I can see her properly now. She has a smile on her face, but I know it’s a fabricated one. I could be wrong, but she almost looks panicked. She nods hesitantly. “I have, in fact. just been assigned special quarters I believed were too big for me–right in this tower. I should’ve known you all would show up. Let me take you there.”
Aurelia claps, delighted. “Oh, that is perfect! We asked for you and were led here by the omega–so this is where you’ll be. It’s not great, but I suppose it’s better than being stuffed in a common room with all the other Guild women, right? It’s lovely that we’ll get to live in the palace, and be with the royal family…”
I turn back and start walking away, not able to stand there and watch or hear any of it anymore. If I hought things couldn’t get any worse, fate took it as a challenge and added another source of misery to my life. Now if only I can avoid them for the rest of the year….
It takes a while, but I find my way back to the library. Despite not wanting to, I paused just outside the chamber I’d been living in until yesterday. The doors were closed, and it felt like I’d never really stayed there–only imagined it. Maybe I did.
Before the pain became overbearing, I left, but wondered where Vera was and what she was dong.
I’m no longer a special guest of the Prince, I tell myself harshly as I cross over to the threshold and enter the humongous library of Aurelune. I hope to feel that familiar and immediate sense of relief, but instead, a restlessness rises at the thought of what I just witnessed.
My parents–my adoptive parents- have never been proud of me Maybe I’ve never given the reason. But I can’t recall them being loving either Whatever affection they could gather they’ve always poured it all over Davina. So many times I’ve told myself 1 don’t care that I shouldn’t But sometimes it hurts

Sometimes you just can’t bury that pain so easily.
“May I help you, Miss?” a gentle voice asks from behind.

I turn and recognise the librarian. She looks at me with concern etched on her face–not at all subtle. She looks like she might pull me into a hug if I let her.
“Do you need something?” she asks, even more softly. “I can help you find it. But before that, do you need to sit down? You look distressed,” she mumbles, her gaze dropping to my closed fist. I follow it and realize that I’m bleeding through my fingers.
