She immediately fell silent.
Seeing this, a radiant smile bloomed on Lemira’s face—happiness really was best built on the misery of others. It only made the pleasure twice as sweet.
Lemira headed straight to the dining room. Outside, Evelina’s shrill voice still echoed through the halls as she continued to badger Evander, demanding he find her a new designer dress.
Lucian walked into the dining room, his expression troubled. “Lemmy, was that really necessary?”
“I’ve always been the petty, grudge-holding type—you all knew that about me long ago, didn’t you?” Lemira replied coolly.
Lucian fell silent. He knew now that all the misunderstandings between them had been because Evelina had deliberately stirred up trouble, making him see Lemira in the worst possible light.
In truth, Lemira had never been like that.
Just then, Asher’s angry voice rang out, “So you admit it? Then you should take responsibility!”
Asher had just returned from work and, after hearing about what Lemira had done, was absolutely furious.
Lemira set her fork down unhurriedly. “And what exactly do I need to take responsibility for?”
“I know what happened. How could you act so dishonorably? Eve even got down on her knees to beg you, and you still weren’t satisfied. You’d rather destroy the dress than forgive her?”
Asher could hardly believe what Evelina had told him, thinking she must have exaggerated—but Lemira admitted it herself.
When had Lemira become so unreasonable?
Lemira understood Asher was here to accuse her. She replied calmly, “That’s just who I am. Isn’t that what you’ve told me since we were kids? Now that I’m acting exactly like you always said I would, you’re still not happy?”
When they were children, she’d never done any of those things, but after Evelina accused her, everyone believed she was the culprit. So now, she figured, why not just admit it? At least it would put an end to their constant moralizing.
Asher was so angry he couldn’t get a single word out.
Lucian tried to smooth things over. “Asher, let it go. We’ve got enough to deal with today—no need to get caught up in the details.”
Asher took the out Lucian offered. With Lemira being so defiant, she clearly wasn’t going to show him any respect anyway.
He snorted, “Eve’s already handling major responsibilities at the Langston Group. And what about you?”
At that moment, Evelina walked in. Asher handed her a file. “I’ve already had Finance wire the payment. You’ll need to connect with PZ Group on your end.”
