He hadn’t even reached the legal age for marriage, yet he already had a child. He was young, and with his roguishly handsome looks, it was clear why he had a certain appeal.
Henrietta couldn’t fathom his motives. After a moment of thought, she asked, “What’s your angle? Aren’t you all family? What, you want to take Matteo down and become the star yourself?”
Leon might have come from nothing, but he certainly had the looks for it. Why bring this up now, acting as if he was revealing some great secret?
“No, I don’t care about acting,” Leon said. “As for my motive…” He stood up and walked toward her, then dropped to his knees.
Henrietta recoiled, utterly baffled. Why was he kneeling?
Leon looked up at her, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “My motive is you.”
She froze, a wave of cold shock washing over her. She couldn’t believe the words she was hearing.
“Spell it out,” she commanded, her voice sharp. “Stop being so dramatic.”
“Don’t you understand?” he asked, his voice earnest. “Henrietta, I want to be with you!”
The declaration shattered Henrietta’s composure. She was so stunned it took her a full minute to process his words. When she finally did, fury erupted within her. She kicked him squarely in the chest.
“Are you out of your mind?”
Leon stumbled back but wasn’t deterred. “I’m serious! I mean it!” he insisted with a delusional confidence.
Henrietta was shaking with rage. “You’re a married man with a five-year-old son. What kind of garbage is coming out of your mouth? Get out! Get out right now!”
“No, listen to me,” he pleaded. “I can get a divorce immediately. I can give up the child!”
