And compared to a superstar, a civilian was just... different. No matter how rich he was, he wouldn't command the spotlight wherever he went.
Artina threw herself into Matteo's arms. "As long as you don't want me to leave. I don't want to leave you either."
Matteo paused for a second. He had felt a pang of unease when she threatened to leave, but now that she was staying, he felt not exactly thrilled. It was a confusing mix of emotions.
But he was in too deep now. He wrapped his arms around her. "If you don't want to leave, why the engagement?"
Artina looked up at him. "Are you stupid? My engagement benefits you too. Before, our only way to climb the social ladder was by sucking up to that old hag. But now we have two paths! I can be engaged and still be with you, can't I?"
Only children make choices. She, Artina, wanted it all.
Matteo's eyes widened. "Of course! Darling, why didn't I think of that? I really thought you were leaving me."
He put on a wounded expression.
Artina preened. "As long as you're good to me, I'll always be with you. Once I'm married to this guy, I'll not only be set for life, but I'll make sure you get all the best resources and opportunities, too!"
Matteo's mood lifted instantly. The gloom that had been hanging over him vanished. He hugged Artina tightly. "Darling, now I know you're the only one who's truly good to me!"
"Of course," Artina huffed. "I'm the one who genuinely loves you. That old witch broke up with you over a 'happy birthday' text and is still being difficult about getting back together. She doesn't love you at all."
Matteo nodded. "You're right. Even if she did take me back, I only want her for her family's money. She's nothing compared to you."
His words sent Artina into a state of bliss, and she leaned in to kiss him.
"Wait, wait, darling, hold on," Matteo stopped her. "Which family are you marrying into? You know, there are plenty of rich families in Juno City, but not many top-tier ones. Are there any that can really compare to the Sargents?"
Artina giggled. "That's where you're wrong. There are some ancient, powerful families in Juno City that are so discreet they aren't even on the official rankings. But don't you worry, the family I'm marrying into is even bigger than the Sargents!"
Matteo was stunned. He wasn't from Juno City, so his knowledge of its elite circles was nothing compared to Artina's. "Really, darling? Does that mean we've hit the jackpot?"
"You bet," Artina said proudly. "Henrietta is going to pay for everything! My fiancé's family could crush the Sargent Group without breaking a sweat."
Matteo was even more shocked. "Which family is it? You're not going to tell me?"
Artina deliberately played coy. "I'm not telling. You'll find out soon enough."
Since she was being so smugly mysterious, Matteo didn't press her, choosing to believe she was telling the truth.
"In that case..." Matteo's eyes narrowed.
Artina finished his thought. "We'll work both sides. You keep trying to make up with Henrietta. Who knows, she might actually take you back. I'll charm my fiancé, and once I'm married, we'll have access to both families..."
