That was enough to put Artina's mind at ease.
After a bit more flirting, she closed the chat and immediately called Matteo back. Before Matteo could say a word, Artina launched into a tirade about how miserable her day had been. After a few sentences, Matteo cut her off.
"Your assistant already told me all that. Artina, do you have any idea what a huge mess you've made? You've dragged me into it too! You were acting so tough last night, it made me think I could get tough with Henrietta. Now we've completely blown it, and there's no going back. We're finished. This is all your fault!"
Artina frowned, then chewed Matteo out. "What are you so scared of? I already told my fiancé about how Charlotte tortured me. He's sending people to take care of it!"
Matteo scowled. "You think Charlotte is afraid of your fiancé?"
"Of course!" Artina said proudly.
But Matteo wasn't convinced anymore. Not after what Henrietta had said in her office. She had listed a whole string of powerful families. What good was Artina's one fiancé against a network like that?
Matteo took a deep breath and relayed Henrietta's entire speech to Artina. "Do you really think someone with her connections is going to be scared of your fiancé?" he concluded. "Charlotte is her best friend; of course she's going to protect her. You need to tell your fiancé to back off, now. Stop making trouble. In a few days, when she's cooled down, I'll go and try to explain, beg for her forgiveness."
Besides kneeling and groveling, Matteo couldn't think of any other options.
Before Artina could respond, Matteo added urgently, "You have to stop, right now. No more meddling. Or, you can fight her on your own. Just leave me out of it!"
Artina scoffed. "You just wait and see. My fiancé will definitely put Charlotte in her place. As for Henrietta, I'm not worried about her yet. She wasn't the one who tormented me today. But if she dares to interfere on Charlotte's behalf, then we'll see who's really in charge!"
With that, Artina hung up, leaving Matteo half-dead with fear. He was terrified of being implicated. But Artina was being so defiant. Could her fiancé really be that powerful? Was he some old man in his sixties?
Matteo was overcome with anxiety. If he couldn't talk her down, he just hoped she wouldn't drag him down with her.
...
Half an hour later, Charlotte called Henrietta again. "Henrietta, I was wrong. Artina's fiancé really does have some pull! He called my father. My dad just called me and tore me a new one."
Henrietta was surprised. "What did he say?"
"He said this is someone we can't afford to offend," Charlotte explained. "He told me I'm forbidden from finding excuses to torment Artina anymore. He even said I have to treat her with respect. Can you believe it?"
Henrietta frowned. "Who is her fiancé?"
