Jethro also came over, taking off his coat and draping it over Leticia’s shoulders. “Let’s get you inside. It’s cold out here.”
The autumn wind was biting, and the chill on her wet skin was making her shiver. Leticia’s composure finally broke. With a choked sob, she threw herself into Jethro’s arms.
“Jethro…” She cried pitifully. “Yosef only has eyes for Henrietta now. He was abroad for so many years, and now that he’s finally back, he doesn’t even see me anymore! He didn’t even ask if I was okay!”
As the only daughter in the family, Leticia had always been doted on by both Yosef and Jethro. She couldn't accept that her eldest brother, whom she had worshipped since childhood, was now completely devoted to another woman, especially a woman she disliked so intensely.
She felt Henrietta was unworthy of him. Her brother was so perfect, so brilliant. How could he have been captivated by a woman with such a long, messy relationship history? A woman who had initially rejected the marriage alliance for that low-life? If not for that, Zelina would have arranged their marriage years ago.
To Leticia, it was simple: Henrietta didn’t love her brother. She had only chosen him after her previous relationship failed. Her brother was nothing more than a rebound.
She had assumed their marriage would be a loveless arrangement, but she had been wrong. Yosef treated Henrietta with such care, attending to every detail with perfection and giving her the utmost respect. It was more than Leticia could bear.
Jethro gently stroked her hair, offering silent comfort. He understood her feelings all too well.
Henrietta’s earlier guess had been correct: both Jethro and Leticia were fiercely devoted to their older brother. Just as Yosef’s top aides revered him as a god, so did his own siblings. Now, their god had turned all his attention to a new follower, one they deemed deeply flawed. Their hearts were filled with a complex mix of confusion, resentment, and raw jealousy.
Zelina, who had been standing nearby, sighed. “I understand how you feel, Leticia. But you are the daughter of this family, and you must understand that both Yosef and Jethro will marry and have families. They will love and cherish other women and spend their lives with them. You are their sister. If you were to marry, and your husband’s sister acted this way, how would you feel?”
At her mother’s words, Leticia’s sobs quieted.
Zelina had made her point and said no more. But Leticia wasn’t finished. “But I don’t like her! She’s not good enough for Yosef!”
Zelina found this amusing. “Your brother chose the person he loves. Does it matter if you like her? All that matters is that he does.”
“Furthermore,” Zelina added, “Henrietta is more than worthy of Yosef. If anything, he’s the one who married up.”
This infuriated Leticia. She pulled away from Jethro and stared at her mother, stamping her foot. “Mom, how can you say he married up? Are you serious?”
