Tears welled up in Artina's eyes. "It's all my fault," she sobbed. "I was just trying to help, but I made things worse."
Jethro pulled her into a hug. "You live and you learn. Just don't make the same mistake again." Given her sweet, childlike appearance, it was easy to forgive such a foolish mistake.
"I know, I promise I won't!" she whimpered, playing up her youthful charm to its full effect.
Jethro fell silent. Artina pulled away from his embrace, her expression suddenly urgent. "But Jethro, you had a falling out with Yosef because of me, and now he wants to disown you! What are we going to do? Maybe you should go and explain things to him. You can't be kicked out of the family!"
Jethro remained calm. "Yosef doesn't make idle threats. But don't worry, Artina. I have my own businesses and career. Even if I'm disowned, I can still give you a life of luxury. It might not compare to Yosef's, but it will still be among the top tier."
Jethro was an exceptional neurosurgeon with his own hospital, not to mention the ancestral assets he'd inherited. He also held shares in Y-N Group, which had been built upon the original family business, Nash Group. When Yosef took over at seventeen, he had transformed it into a global commercial empire. Jethro technically owned half of the shares from the original Nash Group, but out of respect for his brother, Yosef had never touched them. In turn, Jethro, also out of respect, had refused the shares, knowing the company was now entirely Yosef's creation. It was Yosef who had insisted on giving him a one percent stake.
But now, with their relationship in tatters, Jethro had no intention of keeping that one percent. It was the fruit of Yosef's life's work. If Yosef truly went public with disowning him, Jethro would publicly return the shares, along with all the dividends he had ever received. It wouldn't matter to him. His personal fortune was enough to place him firmly in the ranks of the super-rich, a life of unimaginable wealth for most.
But that wasn't enough for Artina. Her ultimate goal was still Yosef. If Jethro left the Nash family, how would she ever get close to him again?
"No, that's not right! Why should you have to leave?" she said, her voice rising. "It's not about living a good life. It's about the principle! You are Jethro Nash, your parents' son, his brother! How can he just kick you out? And it's your right to marry who you want. He can't force you. You absolutely cannot back down on this! You can't let him disown you."
Jethro smiled faintly. "You're wrong about one thing. Yosef is more than capable of interfering with who I marry."
Artina's eyes widened, a tear trembling on her lash. "What?"
Jethro sighed. "You can't even begin to imagine what Yosef is capable of. Do you think if I took you to the courthouse tomorrow, anyone would dare issue us a marriage certificate? They would find every excuse in the book to turn us away."
