Artina slumped, feeling utterly defeated and deeply conflicted. On one hand, Jethro’s defiance was undeniably attractive. His strength, his willingness to stand his ground—it was the kind of powerful masculinity that was intoxicating. But on the other hand, it meant her dreams were turning to dust.
And even if Jethro was charismatic, he was no match for Yosef in the business world. He could build his own empire, but it would always exist in Yosef’s shadow. That meant she, in turn, would always be beneath Henrietta, forced to watch from below as Henrietta reigned supreme. Worse, if Yosef decided to punish Jethro by actively working against him, Jethro might not even be able to get his own ventures off the ground. He'd just admitted that with a single word from Yosef, they couldn't even get a marriage certificate. How deep did that man's power run?
If Yosef was that powerful, that untouchable, then Henrietta would be too. How could she ever hope to bring Henrietta down if she was protected by a force like that?
Suddenly, she remembered the necklace Henrietta had been wearing at dinner. "That necklace Henrietta had on…"
"Stargaze," Jethro finished for her.
Artina's eyes widened. "The one the news said was worth ten billion?"
"Yes," he confirmed. "It's not that surprising. Yosef bought it at the auction. He gave it to her at her birthday party."
Artina barely managed to keep her expression neutral. Her birthday party! The same day she and Matteo had hooked up on the rooftop, an act she'd thought was a secret, profound humiliation for Henrietta. But while she was engaging in a sordid tryst, that witch was receiving a gift of unimaginable value. The thought made her sick with rage.
"Ten billion… so that's a symbol of her status now? And she just had to wear it to dinner."
"Yes and no," Jethro said.
"What does that mean?"
He answered seriously, "To be honest, Stargaze is just a little trinket Yosef bought on a whim."
Artina was speechless. "Ten billion is a little trinket?"
"To Yosef, yes, it's nothing," Jethro affirmed. "That's why it's both a symbol and not. A casual purchase isn't much of a symbol. But since there's currently no piece of jewelry more valuable, I suppose it qualifies."
He then added, with a matter-of-fact tone that drove the point home like a dagger, "You have no idea how powerful Yosef really is."
Even now, after their explosive argument, Jethro's voice was filled with an undeniable reverence for his brother. He spoke of Yosef as if he were a god.
