There was an undeniable magic in his touch, a dark gravity that always pulled her under. Henrietta abandoned her racing thoughts. Closing her eyes, she surrendered to the intoxicating slide of his hands, letting him take whatever he wanted.
Yet, part of her mind lingered on his earlier accusation—did she want to protect Aster? She hadn't denied it. Any normal man would assume her silence was a confirmation. Yet here he was, perfectly unfazed, claiming her in the dark as if nothing had happened.
Did that mean he truly didn't care? Henrietta pondered the thought for a fleeting second before the suffocating wave of desire swept her away. Any rational thought vanished in the heat of his embrace.
The next morning, Henrietta made a firm decision: no more soup deliveries for Aster. He was being discharged tomorrow anyway. Given how Yosef had terrified him into total silence the night before, the boy was probably too rattled—or guilty—to push his luck further. The ridiculous charade ended today.
Yosef still hadn't brought up his investigation into the attack, either. She didn't know if he'd hit a dead end or if he was still digging.
Her thoughts were interrupted by her phone ringing. It was the police department.
Henrietta answered, listening quietly to the detective on the other end. "Understood. Thank you for your hard work," she finally said, hanging up.
The police had completely struck out on new leads. Officially, the attack was ruled as a violent outburst fueled by alcohol and Drugs.
Drunk, high, and completely out of their minds—the attackers were essentially certified lunatics at the time of the incident. The final verdict was that Henrietta had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time, targeted for being incredibly beautiful. The case was closed, but at least the thugs would be locked away for a long time.
That afternoon, Winona Stetson's phone buzzed with an unknown number. Assuming it was a client, she answered professionally. "Hello, who's calling?"
"It's Yosef Nash," the deep voice commanded over the line. "Do not tell Henrietta that we're speaking."
Winona nearly choked on her breath. "...Mr. Nash. What can I do for you?" Thankfully, she was out of the executive suite at the moment, so she didn't have to whisper.
"Are you available to come down to Y-N Group?" Yosef asked smoothly. "I need to discuss something with you."
"Does this involve Henrietta?" Winona ventured a guess.
Seeing her shock, Yosef laid out exactly what had happened the night before at the hospital. "Henrietta claimed Aster was just a random bystander who happened to react the fastest. But based on the way he was talking to her, they clearly have a history."
He leaned forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "So tell me, why is she lying to me?"
Winona took a careful breath, choosing her words wisely. "Are you... doubting her loyalty?"
Yosef took a slow sip of his black coffee. "Hardly. But I know she's hiding something. I don't know her reasons, and if she doesn't want to tell me, I'm not going to force it out of her."
"If she's keeping a secret, she has her motives, and I respect that. But that doesn't mean I don't want to know the truth."
He set the mug down, his expression calm but resolute. "That's why I brought you here. I won't corner my wife into a confession she isn't ready to make. But make no mistake—I have never doubted her loyalty to me for a second."
