Someone else chimed in, “But still, that was too much, wasn’t it? How could he stand by while his own mother got hit?”
“His mother didn’t say a word, she even tripped over herself to apologize! She knows what she’s doing. If someone offered you a hundred million dollars to let your mom get slapped, would you take it? Your mom would probably be the first to agree!”
“From the way Ms. Sargent acted, I bet there’s more to it than him just forgetting her birthday. There must be a bigger secret, right? Otherwise, her reaction was way over the top.”
“Who knows. Maybe there’s more drama to come? Or maybe the Colemans treated her badly before they knew who she was. Now that she’s revealed her identity, she’s getting her revenge.”
“Still, a woman like that seems impossible to please. If you actually married her, what would life at home be like? She’d probably bully the whole family.”
Artina overheard all of this and seethed. She’d always known the Colemans were social climbers who sucked up to the powerful and looked down on everyone else. But before, they had been sucking up to her and looking down on Henrietta. She hadn’t minded their behavior then; in fact, it had made her feel smug. As long as she had the Harmon family name behind her, she would be the queen of the Coleman household after marrying Matteo.
But now, the Colemans were completely focused on pleasing Henrietta. They hadn’t even glanced her way earlier.
Artina stormed out of the building. The Colemans were standing by the entrance, talking amongst themselves. When Artina approached, their expressions all soured, as if she were a viper.
Artina spoke with a sneer, “You people are so stupid. Do you really think Henrietta is going to forgive Matteo and get back together with him? Can’t you see she’s just toying with you?”
Pamela was the first to snap back. “Don’t talk nonsense! Henrietta isn’t like that. Matteo was in the wrong this time, and winning someone back isn’t easy. It takes persistence, dedication, and the right attitude! You think you can just say a few words and fix everything? Who do you think you are? In any case, this is our family’s business. An outsider like you should stay out of it!”
“What! Say that again!” Artina felt a wave of dizziness from pure rage. Jolie used to say nothing but sweet things to her; Artina had even bought her several designer bags! And now she was talking to her like this?
Jolie defiantly turned her head away and rolled her eyes.
Pamela said, “Ms. Harmon, Matteo is right. These little tantrums of yours will only ruin things for us, and you won’t gain anything from it either. Just be good and listen, and you’ll be rewarded in the long run.”
Artina was torn. Part of her was indignant and unwilling, but another part was afraid of the consequences for her own family if she exposed everything.
