She had not imagined this. Nor did she calculate for four deep wounds and a small boy standing in a doorway her with red–rimmed eyes.

She’s been trying to get to him these past two days. Bringing him his favourite snacks. Knocking on the door seti it, hoping he’d come out. But Milo doesn’t even want to look at her. When she walks into a room, bew says his name, he covers his ears.

If Elena would simply talk to him…. if she could find it in herself to release Milo from whatever version of the story already told him… it would help. It would fix the one part of this that Demetra genuinely cannot fix herself.

Elena pushes her hair back from her face to illuminate the diamond ring on her finger.

“What else do you want from me? I’m a weak, wounded, bitten woman recovering in bed. Would you like me to get up and dance for you? Why are you still here?”

Demetra takes one step closer to the bed.

“What about Milo?” Regan asks fast like a reflex.

Demetra notices it.

“Um…just…he and Amira have stopped playing together. He won’t speak to me either and I understand why…I do but if you could just tell him it was a misunderstanding, that I never meant for you to be hurt, it might help them find their way back to each other and-” She stops herself.

Exhales. “You know what, forget it.”

“You want me to tell my son not to hate you?” Elena’s eyebrows rise, and chuckles. “You think I care that he’s not playing with your daughter?”

“He shouldn’t be playing with her anyway.” Regan adds. “She’s beneath him. She’s just a girl”

Demetra turns to look at him slowly.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me. She’s just a girl and not anything that matters in the line of this pack. What are you going to do about it. Hit me the way you apparently do Emris? Try it. I’ll break your hand.”

Elena smiles patiently on the bed as she watches Demetra back away a little. Watches the pale look spread across her face from Regan’s threat. That’ll teach her, Elena thinks.

“Why are you so defensive when it comes to Milo?”

Instead of being scared, the next thing that comes out of Demetra’s mouth makes Regan blink.

“What?” He’s caught off guard.

“What is it about Milo that makes you so defensive?” Demetra holds her ground. “So much that you would insult my daughter? That isn’t a normal uncle and nephew dynamic, Regan. You react to anything involving him like he’s your son or something.”

“Are you fucking INSANE?”

Elena is the one who screams now.

“Are you insinuating that… that…my son is a bastard!? First you get animals to bite me, and now. I swear I’ll tell Emris every word of this.”

Demetra takes the cue to leave. But before she does, she reaches out and picks up the platinum card from the bed.

She turns it once between her fingers.

“I think you’ve done enough shopping for one day, Elena.”

The moment she leaves, neither Regan nor Elena say anything.

The room that had been so full of noise thirty seconds ago is now completely silent — and the silence has a texture to it dense and airless, the kind that settles after something has shifted in a way that cannot be shifted back.

Elena gets up from the bed slowly until she’s standing directly in front of him.

“Don’t yell. I will, alright? There’s already a wedge between her and Emris. I’ll… think of something to drive it farther apart. But when I get rid of her, I must take away the blame from both of us soo I gotta think correctly.”

“Whatever it is, think faster. Cause if she tells Emris, then…. we’re both dead Regan.”
