When We Were Mates (Demetra and Emris) novel Chapter 120

Chapter 120

Demetra Pride Convenant.

Contd.

But here we are.

The reason I couldn’t hold it anymore or keep my hands off him….was because of how he defended our kids. While Emris spoke, I thought: How hot is he right now?

No longer does he see the world the way he used to in that powerhungry, ruthless, willing to burn everything down for a scrap of territory.

Is this it?

Am I going to want him inside me over every attractive thing he does? At this point, baby

number two is inevitable.

What are you going to say to Slade?I ask, turning from the window. Have you thought about how that conversation actually goes?

Not yet.

He’s not talking to me either, you know.I bring him a cold glass of water because he has, in fact, put in considerable effort this morning and the least I can do is keep him hydrated. He catches my hand and kisses the back of it before taking the glass, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes the baby problem worse.

If he’s angry at you, it’s still because of me.I watch Emris swallow.

Maybe I can get Sabrina to speak to him first. Sort ofwarm the ground before you go in.

Something shifts in his expression. Quick, the neck muscles doing that thing they do when a thought arrives that he wasn’t expecting.

Sabrina?he says. Is she his second chance?

I raise my eyebrows. What?

What.he says back.

We stare at each other.

How do you know Slade can get a second chance?I ask slowly. Did you already know he rejected his first one?

News travels, honey.

Chapter 120

Hm.I look at him for a moment longer. There is something in that answer that I’m going to come back to later, when I have more time and fewer clothes on and can ask the question properly.

Anyway, when you talk to him, can you be on your best behavior? After all, you’ve been the one making his life a living hell. Plus, that damn video you sent him just happened to be the tip of the iceberg-

I glare.

Emris licks his lips with the expression of someone who is aware they are guilty and has decided attractiveness is an adequate defense.

I have to go.I bend and give him a kiss on the side of his face. You should get dressed too

I feel his hand land on my backside possessively as I walk away.

*******

After freshening up I make it back to the house office, where I’ve told Kris to grab lunch from the kitchen before we start. The room is quiet and I use the ten minutes alone to do something I’ve been putting off.

A new phone sits on the desk in its packagingdelivered to the pack house this morning, ordered the same night I got home from the club. I transfer everything I need from the old one, methodically, contacts and files and the photos of the kids.

Then I close the old phone in my hand and look at it.

That unknown number is still there. Following the incident that happened between me and that strange man, I don’t ever want to see it again. I remember someone taking it from my purse but my memory of it is so hazy

I drop it in the fire place and watch it burn.

There’s a knock at the door and I turn around.

Hello?

It’s Elena. She looks at the fireplace, then at me, with one perfectly shaped eyebrow raised.

Burning evidence?

Can I help you, Elena.

I say her name the way you say a full stop, and move around to my side of the desk to sit.

Chapter 120

(23)

Since you asked for help, I might just offer some friendly advice. She and her eyes do a full, slow pass over my outfit. The jean skirt is not exactly Lunalike, is it?

steps inside anyway Are you trying to give the Gammas something to look at? I could help you with your wardrobe, genuinely. Because right now you look like Teddyand I say that with lovehow is anyone supposed to take you seriously when you dress like you’re going to a lecture?

I fold my arms.

Why would I take wardrobe advice from someone who is squatting in my pack house? And just so we’re orientedyou are far older than me, Elenawhich already makes your generational math questionable. So I’m not really your demographic for unsolicited styling feedback.

She scoffs.

Anyway. Thank you for speaking to Milo. I assume Emris asked you to.

He is the father of my child. That’s simply how we parent togetherEmris and I, oh, and congratulations….Amira is officially the pack heiress. How lovely for you both.

Milo is her brother. They both have Emrislovethat’s what matters-

Oh, don’t bullshit me, Demetra!Elena stops in front of my table. You’re just saying that because that’s what a good little Luna is supposed to say.

I stand up.

I’m saying it because I am their mother-

Milo is my SON!SHE YELLS.

You continue to spread toxicity like that, and I swear, I’ll personally ensure that you lose access to Milo. Completely. It won’t even matter what Emris says. I’ve had you removed as Luna from this pack before. Recalibrate what you think I’m capable of and try again.”

She goes very still.

For exactly one second, the performance drops entirely and I see the recalculation.

Then her smile comes back.

Congratulations again, truly. I guess the rumors in the pack are true, considering the several bite marks on your neck. Everyone is talking about how Emris can’t keep his hands off you. How he’s been going easy on them during training. It’s all thanks to your magical pussy.

Kris knocks and enters at exactly that moment.

Okay, Elenacan you leave now-
