The voice isn’t spoken aloud. It’s inside my skull… by my wolf. Snarling me awake like I’m a soldier and he’s my commanding officer.

I crack my eyes open in the night where my is bedroom is dark. I feel painbut it’s not my own. Someone else’s. It’s in my fangs, in my claws, in my spine. Like the echo of a transformationa shifting that isn’t mine.

No way! Is that a sensation link-

My wolf grits letting me know it’s not his doing. But he opened the sensation link which is supposed to connect me to whatever Demetra may be going through right now.

I jerk off the bed. I’m wearing nothing but loose joggers!

I grab my phone and start calling her. I just spoke to her whatthree hours ago? Four? She said she was going to sleep. She said the lights were off. She said her roommate was asleep.

The phone rings and rings. Once. Twice. Three times. Four. Five. She doesn’t pick up.

I’m already leaving my bedroom, phone pressed to my ear and I’m not stopping at any point even as the hallway is dark and the pack house is quiet. Everyone is asleep.

I scroll to Vanessa’s contact and press call.

The moment I call, she picks up like she was already awake.

I need you to find out where my Luna is.

Alpha Emris. I have told you already. I am not her babysitter, and-

I sent a sum of a hundred thousand to your account.

She exhales.

I will return it-

Don’t do that.I’m at the end of the hallway now. I just need you to find out where she is for my own mental health. Can you do that? Or do I need to threaten you? Because I swear, I can go low. I have the range for it and right now I have the

motivation.

The line goes quiet but I can hear her breathing. Finally, she exhales.

Fine. Give me a moment to get to her room.”

Thank you.

She ends the call and I press the phone to my forehead.

Demetra.

Shit.

You are putting me through actual hell right now.

And it’s not even the danger partor it is…..but that’s not all of it! I’ve been lying awake three nights out of seven since she left because the bond pulls differently when she’s far away. I am aware, every moment, of which way Rocksville is from wherever I’m standing.

Isn’t it bad enough that I’m jealous? That some college kidsomeone her age, someone who can stay up late and go to parties and doesn’t have pack meetings at six in the morning is going to get Demetra attracted to him? And all of a sudden, our bond weakens?

The last thing I want is for me to get signals that you’re in danger. And In pain.

I look at my phone again waiting for that call back from Vanessa.

I swear, if a hair on her head even gets hurt, I’m withdrawing her from that school. I’m burning it to the ground. Talk about inspiration? She’s going to get inspiration when she watches it all burn.

My phone buzzes and Demetra’s name lights up the screen.

Demi-

She’s asleep.A male voice is what I hear and I go very still in the middle of the corridor. It’s a dude’s, alright. Young. Confident. The kind of voice that probably makes girls at Wolf Arts giggle.

Who am I speaking to?

A friend.

Name.” I growl as a command.

He hesitates over the line.

Travis Crestville—

Travis?Another voice cuts in but this one is female and it sounds like she snatches the phone away from him.

Um, hiEmrisIt’s Lolly.

I exhale. Push my hand through my hair. My heart is still pounding, but at least I’m not planning a murder anymore. At least not that murder.

Where is she? Something happened to her, didn’t it?

ActuallyI hear Lolly moving. Give me a moment to get away so I can explain it to you.”

I count to five and each second feels like an hour. Then she speaks again.

Demetra wanted to go to some pack. It’s herorigin pack. And well, we went there-

What do you mean origin pack!? Her father is the Alpha of the Lion Pride. What does she need an origin pack for!?

Please don’t be upset, Alpha. It’sshe wanted to go and we didn’t want her to go alone-

Who’s the bastard that just spoke to me on the line?

His name is Travis. He’s a good person. Um, Demetra is asleep at this moment because it turns out that her wolf was unlocked. She’s a White Omega. And for the first time ever, her real claws sniped out.

White Omega.

I know what that is. I know exactly what that is because my father’s library had three volumes on prehierarchy bloodlines

and I read all of them at fourteen. White Omegas. The most misclassified bloodline in wolf history. Suppressed, hidden, misread as standard omegas for centuries until someone looked close enough to see what was actually underneath.

And the only thing I can think about right now is how they are not supposed to mix with Alphas. But Demetra has Alpha blood-

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.I close my eyes. She’s unconscious, isn’t she?

NoAlpha, listen to me. She’s asleep. Not unconscious. After the shift she walked out on her own two feet. She just needed to come down from it. We’re in the parkway of the dormitory right now, we just got back. I promise you she’s okay. She’ll call you when she wakes up.

What is going on here?I hear Vanessa’s voice.

Give the phone to the matron,I say, trying to build my head around everything at once. White Omega. Unlocked wolf. A boy named Travis who answers her phone at. I look at the timeone in the morning.

But before I can think outside of it, before I can plan or panic or pack a bag to drive to Rockville myself, I need to make sure that Demetra is really asleep.

Emris?

I need you to check if my wife is unconscious or asleep right now.

Vanessa sighs in a way that’s long for a wolf who’s dealt with too many Alpha egos can produce.

Fine.”

I wait at the other end of the line until Vanessa’s voice comes back. She’s asleep. But very tired. I’ll get her to her dorm.

Thank you.

The call ends and the next thing I’m doing is booking a private flight to Rockville. The computer screen glows as I let my managers know of my incoming schedule. Good thing I own a jet companyso no waiting, commercial bullshit, no questions from TSA about why I’m carrying weapons.

I head to Silver’s room, grab a pillow and slap it over his face.

WHO’S THAT!?

He jerks upwild confused, eyes bloodshot and kneeling on the bed like he’s about to fight an intruder.

Fucking beta.” I toss the pillow aside. I’m the one doing all the contests. Why are you getting up like you’ve got trauma?

Silver blinks at me and his brain boot up slowly.

Emris?

Yeah, it’s me.I tuck my hands into my pockets. Get refreshed. We’re going to Rockville.

I’m already moving out of his room.

Wait. You’re going to see Demetra. Why the hell are you taking me along?

flook back at him.

Well. You and the elders told me it was a good idea for me to open the doors of the Black Covenant to other states. The elders complained about how the pack needed fresh alliances. About how I’ve neglected relationships with other territories because I’ve been too busy cleaning up messes that shouldn’t have been messes in the first place.

Silver squints. He knows I’m full of shit.

Well, I’ve decided we should start the tour at Rockville.

Oh wow. How fucking convenient.

Yeah.” I smile. It’s not a nice smile. I’m gonna go tell Mom about theimmediate changes. We’re leaving in an hour.”

I walk out of his room.

But at the back of my mind as I walk, I’m thinking.

White Omega.

So Demetra’s mother was a White Omega.

I’ve kind of tussled with one before. Don’t remember what the argument was about….something about when I was in Rockville studying at Wolf Arts. Something about her hating pompous alphas who thought they owned the world. Her howl came out of nowhere and pierced my ear like a thousand whistles.

I hope that’s not where Demetra went to find answers.

Regardless.

Alpha and White Omega.

White Omegas are specially warned not to mate with Alphas. It’s a contradiction like fire and ice trying to share the same body.

It’s gonna be like learning how to be a wolf again. Demetra is going to have the sensitivity of an Alpha blood. White Omegas are already vicious. Alphas are already erratic. Now imagine that combined.

This is not something that mental exercises are going to fix. I’m going to have to help her as I’ve combated three bloodlines so I know what it’s like to have pieces of yourself that don’t fit together.

Shit.

Don’t tell me my mate is about to become vicious like those sets of shewolves? She’s already so stubborn now imagine her with White Omega fire running through her veins.
