When We Were Mates (Demetra and Emris) novel Chapter 201

Chapter 201

Alpha Emrix.

Contd.

I’m still breathing hard when Demetra knocks on the bathroom door

This is what? Fifteen minutes after what she just put me through. My body is still humming. I’m technically down there-

“Come in.”

“Slade has found Sabrina. We should be going downstairs before they think-

“Before your daddy thinks you’re here with my jewel in your mouth?”

I turn off the tap in the mirror and Demetra rolls her eyes at me.

“I’m going downstairs without you.”

I don’t let her do that. I come out of the bathroom at once and I can’t even look this she–wolf in her eyes. How on earth she manage to make an Alpha beg like a beggar? It’s not like this is the first time she’s turning me to this but this time around, I didn’t even last two minutes…

“Awww….my trybrid is cute.” Demetra places her hands on my waist and raises her knee up just to graze me there all over again. I flinch and she chuckles all the way out of the room. By the time we get outside the table is already set and I walk normally. I genuinely hope I’m walking normally and I don’t look like what just happened to me.

“I know you didn’t take that long to find Demetra.” Slade says as I approach.

“You don’t know what your sister just did to me-

“Hit you on the knee?” Slade says and walks ahead.

No. Don’t tell me it’s obvious that I’m walking like something is wrong with my groin-

1 clear my throat and try to crack my bones for a moment to nurse that

After we’re all seated, we all do a cheer toward the center of the table for the newly engaged. Live music begins to play somewhere in the landscape of the Lion Pride Pack. It’s a love violin sound. Usually, I hardly care about things like this but watching Demetra on the grass, cutting cake with Sabrina, watching the kids run circles blowing bubbles.

My mom and Allison are standing close with wine glasses that’s catching the last gold of the sunset..it’s beautiful Life used to be dark and exhausting in ways I don’t let myself think about often. And it’s become something I genuinely couldn’t have imagined for myself a few years ago.

This is what a perfect life looks like.

“Man, in a few hours this would be over.” Alpha Teslon says. “Pack duties.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Silver joins us back around the table as wind moves the table cutleries for a moment.

“Tell that to Beta. I do most of Emris’s work.”

“Have you heard? About the barbarian pack

Slade, Silver, and I all go still wultaneously

This is something you don’t say in front of the Lunat if you don’t drænt of my Luna‘

“Did you say Barbarian Wolves?” Demetra asks

I clear my throat, trying to give Teslon the sign

“Yeah. Teslon doesn’t catch it. “They are migrating. And usually, when they are migrating, i pack to take over. Those bastards are evil in a way most people have never personally

I see the look on Demetra’s face like she wants to ask more questions.

“Is the cake good?” I get up, trying to change the subject.

“Since when do you eat cake?”

Right at the end, the kids are already knocked out when I place them into the car. Demetra is saying goodbye to Seth and I lock eyes. I simply give him a nod because I see Alpha Ronin watching, and I want the man to see me as who can let things go.

Emris has been up since last night when the alarm came up all around our territory. The alarms are for emergencies to make sure every member of the Black Covenant Pack sees the broadcast that states they need to be indoors.

“Just do as I say.” Emris voice is harder than usual.

“All the elders are doing is spreading fear. We don’t need fear-

“But we need awareness.” I stand up. “I don’t know a single thing about the barbarian park myself. I want to know what the are, why their history is the way it is, why everyone speaks about them with that specic kind of dread I’ve heard they take over packs…remove the Alpha, breed into the pack itself, which is exactly how their population has grown the way it has over generations.”

“Luna-

“Everyone keeps saying they’re migrating because they’re heading somewhere. Every single pack in the world is afraid of them and not one pack has ever come together to actually push them back to wherever they came from.” I exhale and look around the room. “Obviously we take defensive measures, protect this pack first. But we also need to be talking to other packs about coordinated state protection.”

“Install sensors at every corner of the territory.” Emris ignores me entirely and looks at Monroe. “I don’t care what it costs. the accounts will cover it. We have roughly seven thousand kindergarten–age children in this territory. I will not hear that one single child was taken from school.

Monroe is an exclusive Zeta. I rarely see him. The last time I saw him was when the children were being moved to safety during the Lake situation. If Monroe is standing in this room it means the rest of the exclusive unit is already deployed somewhere close.

“Yes, Alpha.”

I’m upset that he ignored what I said entirely but I’m not going to have a couple’s disagreement in front of the elders.

“I want every Delta working. Put someone on customer services so if any pack member calls, that they saw something. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Alpha.” Creed says it and walks out next.

I look at Wren and she looks back at me with the same unease I’m carrying.

Something is wrong. The way Emris is choosing to protect first is different from how he usually operates. He’s a hunter by nature. If he doesn’t know what’s happening his instinct is normally to go find out first. But the way he’s locking down the pack right now tells me he already has an idea of what this is.

Could it be the thing Dad pulled them aside to talk about last night?

Emris’s phone is sitting on the arm of his chair. A message lights up the screen and I don’t pay attention to it and then immediately after, Teddy starts calling.

Why is Teddy calling when she’s somewhere in the house-

Emris sees the name and answers, phone against his ear…yet, the moment he does something changes across his entire face! He’s on his feet and the gravity at which he got up makes every elder in the room rise with him automatically. Emris pulls
