“Looks like you underrated Alpha Emris again” Radius says it with a toothpick working in the corner of his mouth as he walks into my home like he was invited

He wasn’t

I told this perverted dude specifically not to come anywhere near this estate. The last thing I need is the Convenants finding out I’m back from Rocksville, and the last thing after that is Emris discovering that Radius and I have any kind of existing arrangement. The only reason I’m still breathing after the Alpha contest is that Emris spared the out of something connected to my father’s death during the last contest. That grace has an expiration date and I am acutely aware of it. If he finds out what I’ve been building with Radius, that expiration date becomes today.

Then Laura walks in behind him and I stand up,

“What exactly is happening right now?” Mom says from the doorway. “As far as I can see the plan is still on track. There was no reason for you guys to come here. The Black Covenant has called an emergency…groceries require ID, every movement is monitored, the territory is locked therefore, things are progressing.”

“Flora. The question you should actually be asking is whether Emris is really going to bond with Laura.” Radius drops himself into a chair with his daughter Ariadne, a rare shape–shifter, beside him.

“Obviously not.” I answer.

But then again, we already knew that. There was a ninety percent chance of Emris not bonding with Laura. First, he would try to find a way around it, eliminate the threat and find a third option nobody offered him. The ten percent was the possibility that the accumulated pressure of everything happening simultaneously would overwhelm even him and he’d make a decision to protect the pack by accepting the bond.

But I know Emris.

He would rather kill Radius with his bare hands under the full weight of that pressure than disrespect his bond with Demetra. That’s not speculation. That’s character assessment based on years of watching him.

“Wait, you already knew he wasn’t going to bond with Laura?” Mom looks at me.

“Yes. Our plan hasn’t gone south yet which is exactly why I don’t understand why anyone is standing in my house-

r “I asked Radius to come because I think Emris has a new plan.” Laura says.

I fold my arms and wait. I don’t want to believe she’s getting scared because I’ve known her for a long time now, and she doesn’t get scared. You think I’m evil until you hear the story of Laura and what she does when she’s pissed. At Wolf Arts, I stayed away intentionally from Demetra when Emris came into the picture. Even before he did, I did my best to stay away from her because first, the contest between us wasn’t over. In what world would I just take the defeat he gave me and become some sort of silent professor?

No. It doesn’t work that way.

I also didn’t know was that Laura was developing feelings during those months. If I had known I would have told her who Demetra was to Emris immediately. I hope she’s not far enough gone that the feelings are making her afraid.

“Why do you think Emris has a new plan?”

“He took his pack to discuss the barbarian situation with Demetra. My guess is they went to the Lion Pride which means he’s

Everyone in the room glances between us.

“Wow” Ariadne’s voice comes from the corner where she’s been standing with a lollipop, listening to everything with the bright–eyed attention of someone who finds other people’s destruction genuinely entertaining. She twirls the stick between her fingers. “You want Emris and you-” she points the lollipop at me, “–want his Luna. That’s delicious actually. So we’re fastening the plan? How do we compulse Emris if his Luna has already cut you off from the inside?”

“Derisha placed an order for a dress for Slade’s engagement which means the Convenant Pack will be at the Lion Pride for the ceremony.” Laura says. “Security at the Lion Pride will be different from the Covenant Pack house. There’ll be other pack guests, movement, noise. We can move within that without being noticed.”

She looks at Ariadne. “Because we have a shapeshifter.”

Ariadne flicks her hair over her shoulder and twirls once on the spot while giggling.

“Tell me then. Who am I shapeshifting as?”

“Demetra.” Laura says.

“Ooh, can I see a picture of what she looks like? I hope she’s not ugly.”

“She’s as gorgeous as Aphrodite, daughter.” Radius chuckles, shaking his head, and I feel my fangs press against my tongue hearing him talk lustfully about Demetra like that. Laura pulls out her phone and shows Ariadne. She gasps, snatching the phone from her hand to look closer!

“You’re going to need to get me something that belongs to her. My wolf will need to sniff it long enough to lock in the shift. And I can only hold her face for under twenty minutes which means we need to get to Emris fast once we’re in position.”

Laura nods.

Our plan formed while they were talking and I’m glad it did because we don’t have time to sit in discussion about it.

Here’s what no one outside this room knows….regarding the Alphas Radius has destroyed over the years, they were taken down by my compulsion. I compelled those Alphas myself and made them execute their own Betas, their own Camumas. worked through the hierarchy until the pack dismantled itself from the inside, leaving only the females that Radius then absorbed as his Lunas. I did this because I needed something in return. I knew that sooner or later I was going to contest my Alpha seat and I would need numbers alliances that I didn’t have on my own.

Radius gave me that infrastructure. In exchange I gave him packs.

When Emris defeated me faster than I expected, before I even had the chance to see what the elders would decide about the covenant blood that runs in me, I came back to Radius with a different problem.
