“Congratulations, Luna.” Dr. Jasmine smiles. “You’re experiencing hormonal responses because your mate is bark with you. Usually, male wolves are the reason she wolves get morning sickness”

The whole family chuckles around me.

I look over at Emris.

He’s on the couch reading something on a tablet and hasn’t acknowledged a single word that’s been said in the last ten minutes. Who brings financial files to the pack hospital? Also, he’s got a pissed look in his eyes but I don’t think it’s that darkening one. I think it’s because I puked on him.

“Aww… ouch!”

He looks up when I make the sound at the needle.

“Sorry, Demetra.” Teddy pats my hair from where she’s standing beside the hospital bed, her eyes moving between me and Emris every few seconds.

Door opens and dad comes through first. There goes my plan of keeping the Lion Pride away from the Black Covenant until I had more control over the situation. Silver told me he’d ask them not to question Emris directly so I hope it goes fine in here. Dad doesn’t even look at Emris first when he steps in…he comes straight and wraps his arms around me.

While hugging Dad, I see Slade looking at Emris.

“Are you okay, Cub?” Dad pulls back and looks into my eyes. I smile for him….quickly, deliberately and he takes his glasses off, looks behind me at Emris, and puts them immediately back on.

“Moons, he looks-”

“Dad, don’t.” I hold his arm.

We’re all walking around toes before Emris, who closes the files he was looking at. I told Silver to explained that the darkening flatted Emris’s emotions not his intelligence, so direct commentary isn’t going to land well.

cruris luks at me–again and just like the first time…I think he’s really pissed about that vomit.

Tiffany and Aunt Allison come in with Craig and Timothy and the room gets fuller. Tiffany hugs me and whispers congratulations in my car and let myself smile properly for the first time all morning.

“I’m staying until the results come out.” Silver says, dropping into the vising area of the private room.

“Now that we apparently have someone like Lana Hale as your new Beta-” he gives Emris a look across the room, “–I’m not leaving the Luna or the DNA unattended with people we don’t fully trust in the building.”

Silver is being sarcastic. Laura is not any new Beta…he’s just pissed that Emris seems to be trusting her right now…at least that’s how it looks to us. Only if Laura was there when Ariadne and Lake compelled him. She would have ended up like Radius, instead…she’s some Sahara saviour.

There just had to be that damn picture of me in Lake’s office. How did Laura even get that from Cassie? And how did Cassie meet with her? What time zone? How? When? When did those two connect?

“Four Fangs?” Emris calls them and they all remove their backs from the wall simultaneously. Craig and Timothy stare at the bulky wolves that look like they train for the hockey championships too….athletes measuring other athletes.

“Four… Fangs?” Tiffany repeats.

“Make sure Silver doesn’t interfere with the DNA results.” Emris finishes with his eyes on me.

I glare back at him now and watch him leave the room. He asked the gynaecologist to check if the days ranked up and they did. I conceived after the last time we were intimate. But above that, I’m just truly glad that the child in my womb is alright.

When he told me this morning that I was carrying a pup, the first thing I felt was the spark of our bond coming again. At the time Emris fixed his hand on my belly, I wasn’t sure what he was doing.

However, male wolves can sense the sound of their mate’s heartbeat.

I want to follow him out right now, but I have to answer everyone’s questions about whether I’m fine and all. That ends up happening.

After, Slade, Dad, Allison, and Silver are all talking to each other. I see Craig and Timothy replacing Silver now and staring down the Four Fangs.

When we get back to the pack house the Deltas and Zetas are already lined up outside and they applaud when I step out of the car. Summer hugs me, her mom hugs me too. All the chef appears wanting to know what I’m craving, and the honest answer is that the only thing I want is somewhere in this house with no emotion on his face.

I excuse myself and go up to Emris’s office, where Jupiter and Creed are already standing like they’re in trouble.

“Excuse us.” I tell them.

Emris drops the pen he is holding to look at me. Jupiter and Creed don’t go, so I come closer.

“Go on.” I glance at them. “He may bite, but not today.”

They walk out of the office.

“How did you know I was pregnant?”

“Rust.” Emris says.

“I’m sorry?”

Heard a second heartbeat” He leans back. “What do you want?”

“Emris, you’re my mate. Stop asking me what I want like I’m a stranger. I want you.” I say it and watch his face for anything but find nothing. The Emris know would have shut the door behind us by now,

“Laura told you I was unfaithful and you believed her?”

“No. Not until the photograph.”

“That photograph means nothing. If I was actually with Lake, he would have been Alpha already. Two months passed and I held this pack. What does that tell you?”

Emris doesn’t reply. I see him look back at whatever he has been checking since the hospital time morning, I walk up to him. take his hand away from the pages and place it on my belly, holding it with both my hands.

“You wanted this baby.” I look into his eyes as he looks into mine. “You marked it on your calendar. the time and the dates.” I roll my eyes as I remember. “You even made us try positions we’ve never tried before for this. You weren’t there for me with Amira, Emris but I need you now.” I swallow. “You have scars on your body I’ll never fully understand. I don’t know who the Four Fangs are or what you went through in the Sahara. But I can help you remember what love feels like if you’ll let me. Can you please stop this unfaithful story Laura started?”

Emris takes his hand away from my stomach, and I see his jaw tick like he’s uninterested. Slowly. I sit on him and put my hands on his face.

“I know you don’t feel it. I will never force you. But let me teach you.” I stare at his lips that I’m itching to kiss but I don’t want to be forward. “Emris, let me teach you how to feel again, alright? That’s all I’m asking.”

His jaw is hard in my hands. He’s cold in the way he’s been cold since he walked through the door but he’s not pushing me

away.

“Say something.” I whisper and someone clears their throat.

I look away and see Laura at the door. I get up from Emris and smile as I stand next to him with my hands resting on the table.

“Laura. I was wondering where you’d gotten to.”

“You’re the Luna under the hot seat, and you’re wondering what I’m doing?” Laura scoffs so bad that her fangs are almost

out.

“Hot seat?” I laugh. “Child, please. Do I look even slightly worried? I woke up this morning and the elders weren’t gathered to speak on my case. There’s no rumors that I did anything wrong. You’re the only one in the Covenant Pack who thinks that and you call it a hot seat? Bitch, don’t make me laugh.”

“Bitch!?” Laura’s eyes narrow. “I’m not the one who has several wolves on my roster. Am I?

“I’m not the one with multiple wolves on her record.”
