“So, Emris is coming back!? Does that mean I can get Eden to visit now?” Teddy jumps up from the bed with joy and Derisha rolls her eyes at the little meeting we’re all having in the kids‘ room.

Why are we having a secret meeting in the kids‘ room? I don’t know. Maybe it’s cause Emris hears everything in this pack house and we don’t want him to know we’re actively monitoring his emotional recovery like it’s a project.

“I am talking about your brother’s mental state and you’re jumping to that boy!?” Derisha snaps.

“Mom, he’s not ‘that boy‘. He’s Eden and he’s been training seriously since what happened to us.”

I exhale at the same arguments they’ve been having for weeks.

“Just shut up. Forget Emris. You better graduate college in flying colors before you think about getting pregnant or something.”

“For moonsake, Mom!” Teddy’s face goes red. “Why are you talking about pregnancy? Eden and I use condoms all the time!” “Oh my goodness.” Silver pushes his hand across his forehead.

I respond to Slade over the call I gave him this morning. I asked him to take in Alpha Stone’s rogue group into the Lion Pride pack house for the main while…or permanently if we find out that they can be useful to the pack in some ways. They’ll get free homes, accommodations, and scholarships in most cases for the teenagers in their midst.

“You’re not saying anything, Demetra. I thought you would be the one who’s excited the most.”

“Excited?” I raise my head to Silver from where I’m seated on Milo’s car bed. Only if they knew what Emris said to me just last night. Walk out. Divorce. Whatever you feel is best.

Right now, I have given up on Emris in a way. I’m not going to keep lowering myself trying to pull emotions from a wolf who tells me to leave. Emris remembers me. And that’s quite frankly enough. “Monroe will take me.” I say, not sparing him a glance.

“Monroe didn’t put the pup you.”

Emris says it in that voice he uses when we’re in the middle of a banter. And I know I said I wasn’t going to even spare him a glance. But my damn wolf crooks my neck, and I stare.

He looks down at my fingers and takes my purse out of my hand without asking before walking ahead of me.

I genuinely blink twice.

Is he different this morning or…am I just a loser? What changed between last night and now. Wait…no, maybe he’s trying to trick me. Pull me in, then treat me like a charity case after he’s done playing with my head.

But when I get outside, there’s something OBVIOUSLY undeniably different about Emris!

He’s already at the car and I notice his outfit properly. A white polo golf shirt, I remember him buying a bunch of that because he decided to look more family friendly for the kids instead of the Alpha look that consisted of dark fitted everything.

Now combined with that, Emris has on a brown tailored pant that’s fitted at the waist, enough to show the narrowness of his hips and the power in his thighs. The sleeve of the polo shirt is short so all that muscled arm is just right up my alley. His hair is growing back from the shave, however the tattoos on his skull are still visible, peeking through the regrowth like ancient markings. He looks like a Viking who wandered into a country club but it works. It works too well.

There’s just something about him that’s giving dark vs light. The polo shirt should soften him. The tattoos on his fingers even catch the sunlight as he opens the car door for me.

When I get into the car, I see he’s put my purse in the middle.

When Emris starts driving, I pretend like I’m not staring, but my eyes are on his arms, how he swerves, uses his powerful legs on the brakes, the way he’s manspreading in the car seat. Is it the pregnancy hormones? I swear it’s something, because I hate this guy in real life.

We get to the hospital, and I open the passenger seat myself, walking out of the jeep and going straight into the hospital for the first breath of air that doesn’t have his scent. Right after, we’re taken to the baby and mother unit. Inside the VIP suite, I run a few tests…blood collected and baby checked…with Emris hovering over me.

And if I was not so busy hearing the baby’s heartbeat on the monitor, I would have said Emris was staring at me. For the last part of this, Jasmine joins us in the sitting area, and I drop my cup of water.

“So how is the sex life?” Jasmine says, the moment she crosses her legs.

I blink in her direction. Why the hell is she asking me… US that!? For moon sake, I am the Luna of the Black Covenant Pack and my pack doctor just asked me that in front of my emotionally compromised mate. I am appalled until I remember it’s literally her job, regardless of whether we’re Alpha and Luna. This is prenatal therapy and she needs to know if the darkened Alpha is functioning as a husband.

“No sex currently.” I clear my throat.

“What? It’s completely safe for you two…the parents to have sex at this stage. Are you both worried about the pup? We’ve run the tests, Alpha. Although your wolf was darkened, it’s a matter of your ancient bloodline. It’s not real poison or that sort.”

“Oh no.” I put on a brave tragic face and lean closer to Jasmine, pretending like I’m whispering when really, I desperately actually want Emris to hear one or two of what I’m going to tell say. “It’s not the darkening we’re concerned of. The Alpha returned from the Sahara Den without his… well, equipment.”

I put on a face of sadness as I rest my back against the couch. Jasmine turns to Emris with genuine alarm. “W–what–what exactly-”

I can almost hear Emris scowl at my joke.

“I think it must have come off from the Sahara Den, but please keep this secret for us. This is the real reason our sex life

doesn’t exist.”

“That’s a very big problem.” Jasmine stammers, “Um, Alpha, we can do an examination-

Jasmine looks between us, she’s so badly stunned cause she cannot determine what is true, what is a joke, or what professional response is appropriate here.

“Wonderful session, Jasmine, Next appointment in two weeks…awesome. We can go now, yes?”

“Ah… ah yes, Luna.”

I get up and walk away without Emris right on to my next appointment for the day because I want to do some baby shopping. We don’t know the gender yet but just pick whatever I like.

The valet returns the keys and I get into the driver’s seat, planning my route to the mall when Emris opens the passenger

door.

“Where to?”
