Whispers of Destiny: His Belated Love novel Chapter 158

Pearl had initially come by to check if Rosemary wanted to go shopping and to gauge her mood. She hadn't expected to stumble upon such an awkward scene. Her smile froze on her face, transforming an elegant lady who had seen it all into a stuttering mess: "Uh, you guys enjoy the durian, go ahead. Rosemary, let's catch up another time, you..."

She caught Hogan's possessive glare and was at a loss for words. Grabbing Maxwell by the arm, she made a quick exit.

"...?" Rosemary didn't even get a chance to speak before they were gone.

As the elevator doors closed, she pulled Hogan's hand off her waist. "Are you serious? Do you really have to pick a fight with him?"

"Isn't he the one being a bore? Flaunting himself in front of you when he's history. Did he shamelessly cling to you to get you to marry him?"

As Rosemary turned to head inside, Hogan tried to follow but she blocked him with her hand. "I have work to do. You should head back. I'm not about to do anything foolish."

Hogan: "..."

The door slammed shut without a hint of mercy.

Rosemary changed into her work attire, tying her hair as she walked to her workspace. Hogan had it wrong; Maxwell never hounded her. She might have said they should marry while they were in bed, and though Maxwell agreed, his face was dripping with sarcasm. After a cool shower and some time to rethink, she backed out, only asking him for a loan to clear some debts. He agreed readily enough.

If the media hadn't blown up the story about them sharing a room, they probably wouldn't have ended up married.

It's all thanks to Maxwell, that scumbag, always up to no good!

"Bang bang!" Another round of frantic knocking.

Rosemary, frowning, went to open the door. "Hogan, I..."

What greeted her was a slap in the face, the air from the blow tickling her stray hairs, a bit itchy. Rosemary instinctively stepped back but couldn't dodge completely; the assailant's nails scratched a long red mark across her cheek.

Before she could speak up, the yelling started: "Why did you divorce Maxwell without discussing it with the family?"

Touching her cheek, not broken but stinging, she gave Larry a mocking look, her eyes cold as ice: "Discuss? Would you have agreed?"

"Do you know how many people would kill to marry into the Templeton family? Since you married Maxwell, you should cherish it," Larry frowned. "Call him now, say you regret it, get the marriage back on track before the civil affairs office closes today!"

Rosemary, faced with a man who had her future all mapped out, felt a bitter sadness she couldn't quite explain. Why would someone be so cruel to their own flesh and blood?

"Being married to Maxwell for three years was agony. He had someone else, would stay out all night, rejected everything I offered, wouldn't even taste the food I ordered. Do you want me to waste my life in this sham of a marriage?"

Larry's face softened, perhaps because Rosemary's tone did too, showcasing a rare display of phony paternal affection.

"Aren't all men like that? As long as your status isn't shaken, what's the harm in a bit of fun on the side? Get back with Maxwell, have a kid or two, and eventually the Templeton family will be yours. Once you help the family grow, with power and influence, you could have any man you want, and no one would dare to say a word."
