Maxwell's smile vanished instantly, and he looked away. "Mr. Chambers, you heard me. Your daughter and I are just not meant to be. That money I gave you before, I need it back in my account within a week."
Larry's face turned a myriad of colors. The cash Maxwell had handed over back then was no small sum. "You gave that money willingly. How can you just ask for it back now?"
"I gave you that money to stop bothering my wife. Now that we're divorced, whether you pester her or not is no longer my concern. As for willingly...," Maxwell placed a sleek recording device on the table, "want to hear what you said back then?"
Larry's face turned stormy, his teeth grinding. "No need."
Maxwell's phone buzzed. He glanced at the caller ID, "Excuse me, I need to take this call," and then he got up and stepped out.
Larry glared at Rosemary. "Get back with him. Marry him again."
Rosemary frowned. Did Larry think Maxwell was some kind of trash you could just throw out and pick up again whenever you felt like it?
She stood her ground firmly, "Not happening."
Larry went silent for a moment, then surprisingly relented, "If you don't want to, I won't push you. But we can't just ditch the Templeton family. If you're not willing to get back with Maxwell, then set him up with Stacey."
After all, during the years Rosemary had been married into the Templeton family, he hadn't reaped any benefits.
Rosemary's eyes widened in shock, finally understanding why Stacey had dressed to the nines today. This was the game the father-daughter duo was playing.
"Stacey and Maxwell?" She couldn't help but blurt out, "In your dreams."
Forget about Maxwell being married once; anyone with half a brain could see he'd never tie the knot with Stacey, not even if he was on his umpteenth marriage.
Larry was fuming, but with Stacey's soothing, he calmed down. He took a deep breath, "If you could bag Maxwell with just one night, Stacey can do it too. She might not be a match for you in looks or figure, but she still stands out from the crowd."
He handed Rosemary a small pill, "Find the time to slip this into Maxwell's drink... and with the Chambers family doing well, you'll have even more clout as its heiress."
No sooner had he finished, Maxwell walked back in post-call. Larry hurriedly signaled Rosemary to stash the pill.
She pocketed it but then ratted out her dad immediately—
"My dad wants me to spike your drink and set you up with Stacey in a hotel room."
She ignored Larry's fiery glare and got up to leave.
Maxwell eyed the pill on the table, his gaze turning icy and sharp. "Mr. Chambers, you sure have some tactics."
With that, he left the two with their ashen faces behind.
The scrape of the metal chair legs on the floor was ear-piercing.
With his long legs and brisk pace, the man quickly caught up with Rosemary, who had left before him.
Before he could say anything, Rosemary spoke first, "The money thing, was that on purpose?"
She didn't buy that it was a coincidence, bringing it up right after she nixed the remarriage idea. It reeked of a setup.
