"Since I don't call the shots here, might as well check in with Uncle," Rosemary said, her gaze sharp as she looked toward Jeremy, who was squatting on the side, yanking weeds and trying to make himself scarce. "See if he's cool with burying his own dad in this godforsaken place."
With several pairs of eyes on him, Jeremy couldn't play dumb anymore. "Look, Rosemary, we should just go with what your aunt says. We did have a master check this place out, and it's not too shabby."
Rosemary let out a sigh of disappointment, took out the incense and candles she'd bought, and lit them. Then, with great reverence, she knelt in front of her grandfather's grave and kowtowed three times.
Seeing her give in, Penny decided to quit while she was ahead and was about to butter her up to smooth things over.
Playing good cop, bad cop was something she was a pro at. Just as she was about to squat next to Rosemary and say her piece, she heard her say, "Grandpa, hang tight here for a few more days. I'll find another master to pick out a better spot and then we'll move you."
"??" Penny's eyes bulged in disbelief. "Didn't you say this was all up to your uncle? He told you to listen to me, and we're not giving the okay to move this grave."
Rosemary stood up, "I said let him decide, didn't say I'd go along with it. If his decision lines up with mine, cool, I'll listen. If not, I'll do what I think is best."
Penny was so furious she lost her wits and raised her hand to slap Rosemary— "Who do you think you are, deciding where the old man gets buried? And you have the nerve to talk back to your elders? I'm going to teach you a lesson on behalf of your mom, who got knocked up before getting hitched, you disrespectful brat!"
Everything happened so fast. Penny was right beside her, and before her slap could land on Rosemary's face, a man's hand caught her wrist!
Pain shot through the trapped wrist, spreading along her nerves, and Penny's face twisted in agony as sweat broke out on her forehead. "Let... let go."
Maxwell looked at her coldly, his face dark as a storm cloud, "If you don't want that hand anymore, I'll be happy to break it for you!"
Penny was in so much pain she almost crouched down, but since Maxwell was holding her hand, she could only maintain a half-crouching stance. "Okay... okay... I won't do it again!"
She had just been caught up in the heat of the moment, mistaking Rosemary for Harry.
Jeremy threw down the weeds and rushed over, his face full of urgency, "Maxwell, let's talk this out. Your aunt's just uneducated and rough around the edges, she doesn't know any better..."
He didn't dare pull Maxwell away, so he just supported Penny.
Maxwell flung her away like she was trash. Even with Jeremy's support, Penny still hit the ground hard, her palms scraping against the rough concrete.
Penny screamed like a fishwife, scrambling up and charging at Rosemary, "You think you're Larry's blood? Let me tell you, you're nothing but a fatherless mongrel. Your mom disappeared for a year, came back knocked up, wouldn't say who the dad was, nearly got beaten to death by your grandpa, then found your dad to take the fall. If it weren't for your dad stepping up to the plate, saying he didn't mind, who knows how many times you would've been aborted..."
Jeremy was desperately trying to silence her, "Stop talking!"
He had sworn to his dad to keep this secret for life, even after Larry and his sister divorced, he couldn't let Rosemary find out.
Getting pregnant and finding someone to take the fall? She couldn't believe her mother would do something so immoral. Besides her uncle and aunt, the only person who had known her mother was Martin.
Therefore, Rosemary turned her pleading eyes towards Martin...
She hoped someone would step up and firmly tell her that her mother wasn't that kind of person.
Martin's gaze had been fixed on her the whole time. He wanted to intervene when Penny raised her hand, but he was holding incense at that moment and was a step too slow.
Looking into her eyes, he said, "Rosemary, Rosalind wasn't like that. You're her daughter; you should trust her character and not let a few words from someone sway you."
Rosemary nodded, "Thanks."
Because of his words, Rosemary's mood visibly improved. Regardless of the circumstances, she had to go back and ask Larry, after all, he was one of the parties involved.
Maxwell's deep, dark eyes fell on the two, who seemed oblivious to the world around them. His thin lips tightened into a straight line, and the hand that had been around Rosemary's waist tightened with his changing emotions, but loosened just before she felt pain.
However, his expression grew increasingly thunderous, like a storm brewing...
