Whispers of Destiny: His Belated Love novel Chapter 167

Penny was still going off like a broken record. Just a few days ago, she was the kind, old relative who would fuss over her with warm conversation and tirelessly cook meals to deliver. Now, bam! She had flipped a switch and shown her true colors.

Jeremy caught a glimpse of Maxwell's face, which was emanating an intense aura of gloom and doom. He was so scared that his hairs stood on end. "Alright, enough. Let's drop it."

"Why are you being such a wimp?" Penny snapped at her husband, getting angry at his timid demeanor, and shook off his hand.

"Think about it. Since we moved Grandpa's grave here, your business has been booming, hasn't it? Otherwise, you think you could afford a Benz? More like a tractor is your speed!"

Hearing this, Maxwell's pent-up rage finally found an outlet. "I don't know how smooth sailing it's been for you these past couple of years, but piss me off, and I can make sure the rest of your days are anything but smooth."

His tone was calm, but the underlying message sent a shiver down everyone's spine.

Penny's fiery temper was instantly doused like a bucket of ice water had been thrown on her. She calmed down.

"Dad's been lying here for two years now. He's probably used to it. He might even like the peace and quiet. If you go moving his grave without thinking, you might just upset the old man."

She didn't dare provoke Maxwell, so she played the Grandpa card.

Maxwell let out a chuckle. "Auntie, you've got a point. Why don't you have a chat with Grandpa? If he's got an issue, he can visit me in a dream."

Visit him in a dream? What a joke. Was she supposed to drop dead or pretend she's some medium who can chat with the dead?

After leaving the cemetery, the group headed straight to Jeremy's place to grab their luggage. Harry was in the middle of a gaming session, but seeing them with suitcases made him toss his phone aside.

"Bro-in-law, Martin... you guys heading back to Greenwood? Not sticking around for the New Year's?"

He almost called him "second bro-in-law" right in front of him!

"Wait for me, will ya? I haven't even packed my stuff," he grumbled as he threw things into his suitcase. "Why the rush? You could've given a heads up. I had plans to game with friends over the holidays."

Halfway through his hasty packing, the sound of the door opening and closing, then opening again, drifted in.

Harry dashed out, only to find Rosemary and the others gone. In their place were his parents, looking like they'd just seen a ghost!

Sorting out the grave relocation wasn't going to happen quickly. With her mind heavy with issues, Rosemary couldn't stand another day in Havenfield.

She booked the next flight to Greenwood and called Larry the moment she landed. "Dad, where are you?"

Larry had been living in dread of debt these days, the ghost of past loan sharks looming over him. When Rosemary's call came through, he clung to it like a lifeline, though his tone was still annoyed. "If you're not going to play matchmaker with Stacey and Maxwell, don't call me Dad. Might as well forget I have a daughter!"

Rosemary paused for a few seconds, then said, "Alright. Then may I ask Mr. Chambers where you are?"

Larry: "...the Chambers family."

He hung up right after, clearly fuming.

Exiting the airport, Rosemary headed towards the taxi stand, but Maxwell grabbed her hand. "I'll take you."

Jason was already there, waiting in the underground parking lot.

Rosemary glanced down. The man's fingers were long and well-defined, quite attractive indeed.

Rosemary wasn't keen on going in. Even though it was her mother's home too, her stepmother had thrown out everything that belonged to her mom as soon as she moved in, even redoing the house's decor.

All traces of the past were erased, and facing a familiar yet strange home was truly distressing.

But with the questions on her mind, she stepped inside.

The maid served her rose tea, Stacey's favorite. Rosemary preferred fruit teas but didn't comment, looking peacefully at the rose petals unfurling in the hot water.

Larry glanced at her. "Did you talk to Maxwell about..."

"I went back to Havenfield a couple of days ago."

The man frowned, disgust flitting across his face, and asked perfunctorily, "How are your uncle and aunt? They doing alright?"

"Yeah," Rosemary kept her eyes locked on Larry as she spoke, not missing the flash of distaste that crossed his face. What on earth could've happened to make him feel such disgust towards his own hometown?

Rosemary had been living in Greenwood since she could remember. Her dad never went back to Havenfield, and since all the older folks were in Greenwood too, she never thought there was anything odd about him not returning to Havenfield.

But now that she thought about it, even if their parents weren't in Havenfield, there'd still be siblings, cousins, and buddies, right? Why hadn't he ever gone back, not even once?

Their relationship was already frosty as hell, no need for beating around the bush. Rosemary cut to the chase. "Dad, I'm not your biological kid, am I?"

Larry was still pondering how to play matchmaker between Stacey and Maxwell when this bombshell dropped. His pupils dilated involuntarily, followed swiftly by a surge of anger. "What kind of nonsense are you spouting?"
