Larry was way too worked up, glaring at her with eyes ablaze, his face contorted with rage.
Rosemary was taken aback by his reaction but quickly regained her composure. "Chill out, I was just asking. No need to flip your lid."
Larry's eyebrows were knotted in anger. "Did your gold-digging aunt feed you some lies? You know what she's like. She'd sell her soul for a quick buck."
Rosemary's fingers twitched nervously on the armrest of the sofa. "Well then, how about you give me a few strands of your hair and I'll get them tested? That'll shut up the rumor mill once and for all."
Larry was shaking, whether from rage or nerves, who knew. "You'd take that money-grubber's word over mine?"
Rosemary didn't say a word, her stance clear: she wanted his hair.
After a standoff lasting what felt like an eternity, Larry couldn't stand the tension anymore and pointed to the door, barking, "Get out! Now, immediately, just get the hell out of my house."
Rosemary's eyelashes fluttered down, her spirit seemingly draining away at that moment, her whole body radiating defeat. "Got it."
Larry glared. "Got what?"
"I guess I'm not really your kid," she said, not without resistance in her tone. Rosemary stood up, her eyes blazing as she locked onto Larry, a young woman barely into her twenties yet making his skin crawl. "You better hope you had nothing to do with my mom's death because if you did, I'll make sure you get what's coming to you."
With those words, she left, and Larry found his lips pressed into a thin line just recalling the way she had looked at him last.
Outside the villa, Rosemary didn't just bolt. Instead, she strolled over to a nearby trash can.
She peeked into the Chambers family's bin, which was already brimming.
Minutes later, the Chambers' housekeeper came out with the trash and was startled to see Rosemary. "Ms. Chambers."
Rosemary gave her a faint smile. "Hey, I could use your help with something."
"What is it?"
She had been in the kitchen, and though the door was closed, she'd heard every word of their heated exchange.
"I need you to snag me a set of my dad's dirty dishes he hasn't washed yet. Don't worry, you'll be well compensated."
"Ms. Chambers, this..." The housekeeper looked troubled, knowing she could lose her job if caught.
"Here's my contact info. Take your time to think it over and get in touch when you're ready. I'm not in a rush."
...
This year, Rosemary planned to spend New Year's at Havenfield, but the sudden turn of events brought her back to Greenwood instead.
She didn't call a cab but wandered slowly around the lake. When Pearl called, Rosemary was lost in thought, hugging her knees on a roadside bench.
Though Larry hadn't admitted it outright, his attitude had made it crystal clear whether she was his biological daughter.
