Seeing the two women hesitating, Walter frowned. "What are you waiting for?"
Melanie wrung her hands. "My husband isn't back yet."
"Then go call him!" Walter ordered.
"We can't..." the second woman stammered. "They took the boat into the city to sell fish. That's a two-hour boat ride each way."
Seeing them still refusing to budge, Sloane turned to Walter. "We cannot delay this surgery. If the intracranial pressure builds up any further, he's going to be permanently paralyzed."
The women still refused to sign.
Frustrated, Sloane demanded, "Isn't the man lying in that bed your family? As his direct in-laws, you have the legal right to sign."
The second woman finally blurted out the ugly truth. "But what if the surgery doesn't work, and he ends up half-paralyzed anyway? Who's going to have the time to take care of him?"
"Right now is the optimal window for surgery," Sloane pressed. "If the recovery goes well, there's a very high probability he will be fully self-sufficient!"
Melanie crossed her arms defensively. "You just want to milk us for insurance money, don't you? Who ever heard of someone recovering completely from a brain bleed? Everyone on this island who gets one ends up a vegetable!"
Sloane stared at them in disbelief. "Then why did you even bother bringing him to the hospital?"
"If we didn't bring him, the neighbors would talk!" the second woman cried. "But if you save him and he's bedridden, we don't have the time or money to wait on him hand and foot. We have an entire farm to run and kids to feed!"
Sloane was entirely speechless.
They had dragged the poor man all the way here just to put on a show for the neighbors to avoid gossip, without actually wanting to save him.
The standoff hung heavy in the air.
Sloane shot Walter a desperate look.
To her utter shock, Walter simply nodded at her. "Go in and start the surgery."
Sloane blinked.
Since the Director had given the green light, Sloane didn't waste another second. She spun around and marched straight into the OR.
Seeing Sloane disappear through the doors, Melanie and her sister-in-law panicked.
"Hey! You can't operate without a family signature!"
"If something goes wrong, is your hospital taking full responsibility?"
Walter roared, shutting them down instantly. "How do you think the rest of the island is going to react when they find out you dragged your dying father-in-law in here just to save face, and actively tried to stop us from saving his life?"
"I..."
