Night had fully fallen. Sloane and Zoe were carrying their groceries back to the hospital when a shirtless man on a bicycle suddenly swerved out of an alley, blocking their path.

It was completely dark, and the street was deserted. There was a small restaurant up ahead with its lights on, but it was still two hundred feet away.

Shane sneered. "I hear you've been cracking people's skulls open without permission. You two are running a scam clinic, aren't you?"

Sloane kept her voice dangerously calm. "That is a lie. Get out of our way!"

Hearing her defiance, Shane's grin turned downright wicked. He forcefully kicked his bike to the ground and puffed out his chest, stepping aggressively into their space.
