Sloane's heart raced wildly in her chest.

At noon, a few doctors gathered in the office for lunch.
Their meals were cooked by a local fisherman's wife and delivered fresh every day.
Eventually, everyone finished eating and left, leaving only Dr. Hugo Shaw and Sloane.
Hugo was still eating because of his massive appetite, while Sloane was simply picking at her food. She had been distracted all morning.
Hugo glanced at her between bites until he finally couldn't hold back anymore. "Dr. Sutton, are you in some kind of trouble?"
Sloane looked up, confused. "Trouble?"
Hugo lowered his voice. "Is Major Lennox... harassing you?"
Sloane froze.
She instinctively replied, "No, he's not harassing me."
Hugo couldn't help himself. "He tried to bring you breakfast this morning, but you didn't come down. Then he told me... he told me..."
Hugo grew angrier as he spoke.
How could anyone bully someone like this?
"He told you that we're legally married, right?" Sloane asked quietly.
Hugo cursed. "Exactly! That's exactly what he said! As a commanding officer, the guy has absolutely no shame!"
Sloane spoke without thinking, "He actually is my legal husband."
"..." Hugo's fork clattered onto his plate, his mouth dropping open in a comical 'O' shape.
Sloane was stunned by her own words for a moment.
Because Hugo had insulted Logan, she had instinctively clarified the situation.
Was she somehow defending him?
Hugo stammered, "Are you serious?"
Sloane nodded. "I only found out yesterday myself."
She offered a brief explanation. "We got our license at the Civil Affairs Bureau. After we got married, I never knew his real identity. We had a misunderstanding and separated, and it wasn't until I came to the island that I realized he was in the military."
Hugo was shocked all over again. "So, your relationship fell apart?"
