When Sloane opened her eyes again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed on the ship.

A group of people stood with their backs to her, gathered around the foot of the bed.

A man who looked like a commanding officer was tearing into someone.

"She's from the Naval Hospital! Why was she put on a helicopter the second she arrived? Which absolute genius made that call?"

One of the aerial rescue crew members spoke up nervously, "I had no idea, sir! When we were taking off, she just climbed aboard. I assumed she was specially trained for it."

Another voice chimed in, "When we assigned teams, it was completely voluntary. She should have known what she was signing up for. Without offshore rescue experience, she was supposed to stay on the boat."

Sloane didn't know what to say.

Thinking back, she realized she had actually volunteered for the aerial unit.

But how was she supposed to know it required special training? No one had bothered to tell her.

"She's awake!" Someone noticed her open eyes and announced it to the room.

The commander hurried over to her side, his furious expression instantly shifting to one of deep concern. "Doctor, are you alright?"

Sloane managed a weak nod.

"You were incredibly brave today. Was this your first time on an aerial rescue?" the commander asked with a warm smile.

Sloane nodded again.

The commander's tone shifted slightly. "Well, congratulations. You're the very first person to sustain an actual injury during today's exercise."

Sloane blinked.

Was she supposed to feel honored or completely humiliated?

Director Lucas rushed into the room right at that moment.

Seeing him, the commander immediately started complaining, "One of your people got hurt! Seriously, didn't you brief them before dragging them out here? She hopped straight onto a chopper!"

"We can figure out who's to blame later," Director Lucas said, looking down at Sloane. "Where is she hurt?"

"She fractured a rib!"

Sloane winced.
