Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 89

"I don't have her contact information," Sloane said.

Serena chimed in. "How could you not? Didn't you say she was your patient? You can just check her medical files."

"I don't have that kind of clearance."

"Bullshit. You doctors can easily pull up a patient's details through the system."

"That's strictly for emergencies."

"And you don't think our father's situation is an emergency?"

Silas cut Serena off before she could continue.

He looked at Sloane, his tone sickeningly gentle. "Sloane, you haven't kept in touch much over the years, so naturally, you haven't been keeping up with me. Outsiders think I run a massive company and rake in millions of dollars, but the market has been brutal lately. The business is facing a serious restructuring crisis."

"Right now, Madam Beatrice is the only one who can help us. She owns a plot of land that would be absolutely perfect for our pivot into luxury assisted living. The government is heavily subsidizing those facilities right now. So, I'm begging you to do me a favor. Help me secure that land."

Sloane looked down at the steaming plate of roast chicken in the center of the table, a bitter wave of irony washing over her.

She felt like an absolute idiot.

To actually fantasize that a man who had ignored her since childhood might suddenly harbor some genuine paternal affection for her.

A man like him didn't have a paternal bone in his body. He was only here to use her for a real estate deal.

"I can't help you with this," she said flatly. "First of all, I really don't know her that well. And second, even if I did, I wouldn't bother an elderly woman with something like this."

The poor woman was suffering from dementia. Sloane couldn't bring herself to take advantage of her condition.

Besides, Madam Beatrice had tried to give her an heirloom bracelet the moment they met. What if her confused state drove her to just hand over the deed to the land?

Seeing her refuse, Silas let out a heavy sigh. "I knew it. I can never count on you."

Serena chimed in again. "Sloane, he finally asks you for one little favor, and you're going to be this cold-blooded about it? No wonder he never wants to reach out to you."

A suffocating wave of despair crashed over Sloane, tightening her chest.

"You're right. I'm cold-blooded. I'm heartless. I'm not the good daughter—you are!"

Sloane stood abruptly, grabbing the check from the table. She marched to the register and paid the bill herself, refusing to owe them a single dime.
