At last, a soft laugh escaped my lips. “So…. you are the Royal Prince of the Nightfall Lycan Pack?”
He paused, his deep voice dropping, sounding a bit embarrassed. “Yeah. Also… did I just talk too much?”
I stopped walking. In the dark snowy forest, my eyes were clear and bright. “You mean the fact that you know about the silver blade I took for Alpha Silas?”
Lucas’s Adam’s apple bobbed as if he were bracing himself. “Yeah. Before I came to this outpost, I heard rumors about you. They said you were the youngest, most talented Healer at Headquarters, yet you volunteered for a ransfer to the deadly Badlands. I couldn’t wrap my head around it, so my curiosity got the better of me. I used my royal network to look into your past.”
He stepped closer. “Then I saw you out here, working in the freezing blizzard. The wind was howling, visibility vas zero, and yet you were protecting your medical bag like your life depended on it.”
lightly traced the scars on my fingers-marks left by years of grinding toxic herbs. I realized that over the past nonth, every time things got tough, Lucas was always there. It wasn’t just “on the way” when he brought extra ›lankets, or “just passing by” when he helped carry my heavy supplies.
finally turned to look at him.
Jnder the moonlight, the Lycan Prince’s gaze was as clean and vast as the winter sky-there was no pity in his eyes, only steady, burning admiration.
You know,” I said suddenly, a long-lost sense of relief in my voice. “In the month I’ve been here, you’re the first volf who hasn’t looked at me with pity.”
Everyone else at Headquarters said a broken wolf transferring to the border was a death sentence.
Pity?” Lucas scoffed softly. “A wolf who can put down roots in a frozen wasteland like this is a force of nature. A >ampered, pure-blood white wolf might be pretty to look at in a warm Headquarters, but she can’t compare to a Winter-pine in the middle of a blizzard.”
He spoke fast, the words tumbling out as if he’d been holding them back for a long time. “I love Winter-pines! Their roots run deep, they fight the freezing wind, and they hold the mountain together-”
Suddenly realizing what he was saying, his ears turned bright red. But this time, he didn’t pull away. Instead, he traightened his broad shoulders, looking every bit like the powerful Lycan he was.
So… can you give me a chance, Harper? Let me grow alongside you. Let me protect you in this wild land.”
The night wind kicked up a swirl of snow, rustling through the dark trees.
My inner wolf, wide awake now, gave a joyful howl in my mind.
I heard myself speak clearly. “Yes.”
Lucas’s eyes lit up instantly, like a river of stars bursting into view. He awkwardly reached out his large hand, wanting to pull me into a hug, but then quickly pulled it back, finally settling for a solemn, excited nod.
“Then it’s a promise!”

Before he could take another step, Head Healer Evans came running over, her boots crunching in the snow. Harper! Lucas! Just the two I was looking for! We just got an emergency notice. A large rogue pack has been potted at Blackwood Pass. We need to secure the defense runes there first thing tomorrow morning.”
The terrain there is highly dangerous. We need a Healer to mix the silver-paint and an Elite Warrior to guard her. Get your gear ready; this is a tight mission. You might be out in the field for a few days.”
Got it, Lucas agreed immediately, his protective gaze shifting to me.
nodded. “No problem.”
Healer Evans sighed, adding, “Oh, right. Headquarters is sending some support for this mission too. Apparently… Alpha Silas volunteered to personally escort your wagon.”
Lucas’s bright smile faltered slightly, his jaw tightening as he looked at me.
My expression didn’t flicker. I simply gave a cool, brief nod to Evans.
I turned back to Lucas and gave him a small, reassuring wink. “See you tomorrow, Lucas.”
See you tomorrow!” Lucas’s golden eyes brightened again, his tail probably wagging if he were in his wolf form. Convoy meets at six. I’ll bring you hot meat and tea.”
Watching me head into my cabin, Lucas couldn’t help but grin.
The night deepened, and the wind over the Badlands grew sharper, but I had never felt so warm.
