Chapter 22
The convoy departed promptly at six the next morning.
Lucas jumped down from his truck and pressed a thermos of hot herbal tea and some warm roasted meat into my hands. “Eat while it’s hot. The mountain road is going to be bumpy.”
As he drove, Lucas explained the rogue movements in the area. Getting caught up in his excitement, he reached over and covered my cold hand with his large, warm palm to point at the tactical map.
His skin was burning hot. I gently pulled my hand back, feeling my ears flush red. My inner wolf purred.
During the midday hike up Blackwood Pass, Lucas naturally helped me secure my safety rope around my waist.
As he leaned in, his warm breath brushed against my ear. “I’m familiar with this cliff. Just stay close to me, Harper.”
Silas was about to step forward to help me when the Guard Captain called him over to inspect some rogue tracks in the snow. Silas’s face darkened with frustration.
‘Eat this.” During the break, Lucas pulled a small container of fresh winter-berries from his pack. “Sugar is like gold out here.”
He picked up a berry and held it up to my lips, his eyes sparkling with affection.
hesitated for a second before leaning in to take a bite. From the corner of my eye, I saw Silas’s knuckles turn >one-white as he gripped his silver dagger.
Silas walked over, his voice tight and dripping with jealousy.
Harper, I need you to verify some herb ratios for my tactical records. Are you available?”
Alpha Silas, let her finish her food first,” Lucas interjected smoothly, stepping slightly in front of me.
Silas had already pulled out his notebook, pointing to a specific entry. “There’s an issue with these poison ›arameters. It’s an urgent pack matter.”
He stood incredibly close, practically wedging his broad body between the two of us. He was trying to use his Alpha aura to push Lucas away.
Lucas didn’t even flinch. He shifted his weight, handing the berry container to my other hand. “The data isn’t oing anywhere. If you’re in such a rush, Alpha, maybe you missed some rogue scents on the trail earlier?”
Pack survival requires precision,” Silas growled, his golden eyes flashing dangerously.
Of course it does,” Lucas agreed with a lazy grin. “But checking logs on an empty stomach and misplacing a lecimal point? That’s what I’d call a lack of precision.”
I set down the berries and took the notebook from Silas.
Lucas leaned in close, his muscular arm casually resting on the rock behind me. Our three shadows overlapped on he snow.
The numbers are correct,” I said, scanning the page quickly. “It’s a variation in the silver concentration. I already noted it in the margins.”

Silas’s fingers trembled as he snatched the notebook back. After a moment of thick, heavy silence, he murmured,
I see.”
Before he could say another word, a low, terrifying rumble echoed from the mountain peak above us. The ground >eneath our boots began to shake violently.
Avalanche! Rockslide! Fall back! Now!”
„ucas’s reaction was instantaneous. He let out a loud Lycan roar, grabbing my waist and pulling me forcefully oward a pre-designated safety cave.
But Silas did the opposite.
He charged against the flow of the fleeing guards, sprinting wildly toward the supply sled-where my personal nedical satchel, containing all my irreplaceable herbal research and my mother’s journal, was stored.
Leave it!” I screamed over the roaring snow.
But Silas had already charged into the deadly rockfall zone.
ust as he grabbed my satchel, a massive, jagged boulder came crashing down the cliff.
›ilas hurled my heavy satchel toward the safety zone with all his Alpha might, but the flying boulder slammed lirectly into his back and legs.
Ugh!” He stumbled and crashed into the bloody snow, a sharp crack echoing through the air as his left leg was
rushed.
was about to rush forward when Lucas held me back with an iron grip. “The rocks are still falling! It’s too langerous!”
ilas looked up at me from the bloody snow. He was breathing heavily, but he suddenly smiled.
Blood blurred his vision as another stone slammed into the ground beside his head. He spoke through a pained, vet groan, pushing his words through our broken Mind-link one last time.
I fell in love with you long ago… I was just too stupid to realize it until I lost you…]
You said I was just used to you being there, that you didn’t believe I loved you. I’m willing to use my life to prove ny love now…]
His golden eyes were wet, his voice raspy and desperate.
Can
you believe I love you now, Harper?]
I froze, stunned by his bloody, heart-baring confession. He was literally sacrificing his life to save a bag of papers, just to prove he valued my things more than himself.
The rockslide seemed to lose its momentum for a split second, the falling debris thinning out.
Lucas saw his opening and didn’t hesitate. His eyes flashed a bright, piercing Lycan silver. He lunged forward with inhuman speed, quickly reaching Silas’s crushed body.
“Your left leg is shattered. Don’t move, Lucas barked.

Silas’s gaze bypassed Lucas’s shoulder, remaining locked onto my pale face.

Lucas let out a deep growl, using his immense Lycan strength to shove the massive boulder off Silas’s leg. As he bent down to hoist the bleeding Alpha onto his back, a stray, sharp rock grazed Lucas’s arm, instantly slicing a deep, bloody gash into his skin.
Lucas let out a grunt of pain but held Silas even tighter. With steady, determined steps, the Royal Prince carried the broken Alpha out of the death zone.
