Chapter 24

When I pushed the door open and walked in, Alpha Silas was staring blankly out the frosted window. His handsome face looked thin and pale in the morning light.

“Sit down,” he said, his voice rough. He pointed toward the wooden chair by the bed.

We sat in silence for a long moment. Outside, the sound of the wind sweeping across the Badlands and rustling through the winter-pines was the only thing that filled the room.

‘Actually, after that rogue attack ten years ago… I always had nightmares of you lying in a pool of blood,” Silas suddenly said. “Waking up and seeing you sleeping peacefully in the next bed was the only way my wolf could catch his breath.”

This was the first time I had ever heard him say these things. It turned out that beneath that silent, stoic “Ice King” exterior, a storm of fear had been raging all along.

Unfortunately, I was too stupid and too proud.” He turned to look at me, his golden eyes full of deep regret. hought keeping you trapped in my office as an assistant was a form of protection and compensation.”

I handed him a glass of warm water. “It’s all in the past, Silas.”

“I

Silas took the cup, his fingertips trembling slightly. With his other hand, he pulled a stamped parchment from his bedside table and handed it to me.

The Alliance Certificate for the Silver Antidote… I forced the Elders to reprint it. You are listed as the first and rue creator. Chloe has been banished.”

Thank you,” I said softly, setting the paper down. “But it’s not the most important thing to me anymore.” I looked >ut the window. The supply wagons were pulling away, kicking up clouds of snow.

He followed my gaze and suddenly asked, “Lucas Sterling… does the Lycan Prince treat you

well?”

A genuine, bright smile touched the corners of my eyes. “He tried to make me an herbal soup a few days ago. He ised salt instead of sugar and dumped half the jar in. My inner wolf almost threw up.”

šilas froze for a second, and then, to my surprise, he actually let out a low, broken laugh.

The laughter agitated his chest injuries, making him cough, but I saw a faint glint of moisture in the corners of his

yes.

On the day he was finally discharged, a rare, freezing rain fell over the Badlands.

Lucas held a large umbrella over me, pulling me close into his warm side. He looked up and saw Silas standing at he entrance of the clinic, leaning heavily on a wooden cane.

Through the veil of rain, the two powerful males locked eyes for a long moment.

Silas gave a slow, respectful nod of defeat. Then, he turned and limped toward the pack car waiting for him.

In his rearview mirror, he likely saw Lucas frantically trying to wipe the raindrops off my face while I laughed and dodged. The light in my eyes was brighter than any moon.

Three months later, my Border Defense & Healing Initiative was officially listed as a top priority by the Werewolf

Lucas insisted on staying in the medical tents to pull all-nighters with me. In the middle of the night, he’d hold up a wooden spoon like a microphone and howl off-key love songs until the night guards chased him away. My inner wolf, fully healed by his pure Lycan energy, would howl happily right along with him.

The following spring, we took a vacation.

Lucas flipped through a world map, muttering to himself, “Should we go see the northern lights in the Ice Clans’ territory? Or the stars over the Southern Pack islands?”

I pointed randomly and happened to hit a tiny, beautiful island in the South Pacific.

By the crystal-clear lagoon, Lucas suddenly dropped to one knee. He pulled out a small ring clumsily woven out of beach grass and held it up.

The real diamond fell into the ocean while I was swimming. Can we make do with this for now?”

I laughed out loud and stuck out my foot, letting him slide the grass ring onto my toe. “I guess it’ll do.”

As the warm tide washed over our ankles, he smiled playfully and pulled out a breathtaking, giant Moonstone

ycan Royal ring like a magic trick. His eyes were brighter than the entire sea of stars above us.

Harper Brooks, do you want to join me in leaving our paw prints on every corner of the map where no one else joes?”

leaned down and kissed him, the saltiness of the sea breeze mixing with the sweetness of my happy tears.

Later, we ran through the wild forests on the Great Barrier Reef and rescued lost pups in the Amazon.

Lucas’s phone was filled with nothing but pictures of me-me frowning over an herb bottle near a volcano, me ligging for roots in the mud, my face dirty but my smile brighter than the morning sun.

Late one night, I received a Mind-link message from afar. It was from Silas.

The message contained only one image: Silas standing alone, leaning on his cane in front of a frozen outpost inder the aurora borealis in Greenland. The glaciers behind him glowed with a ghostly, freezing blue light. He had

xiled himself to the Northern Clans.

Warmth pressed against my back as Lucas, still half-asleep, wrapped his strong arms around me. “I dreamed you hrew my meat pies into the ocean…” he mumbled.

laughed softly and closed my eyes.

Moonlight filtered through the gaps in the island tent, shimmering off the royal ring Lucas had given me.

Lucas purred in his sleep, his Lycan aura pulling me tighter against his chest.

Leaning against his steady heartbeat, I listened to the sound of the ocean waves outside.

I remembered what Silas had said in the message attached to the Greenland photo yesterday: “It’s better this way.”

It really is good.

Some wolves spend their entire lives looking for a safe pack, while others are forced to become their own strength.

And I am so incredibly lucky to have found a true mate willing to run beside me through the wildest storms.
